Unhappy Help Oil Pump requires priming

    Engine 3.5 V8 in 1991 disc
Problem I have lost oil pressure to pump
Reason Whilst replacing timing chain and gear I pulled down oil pump, inspected it and as the book says packed it with petoleum jelly and refitted it. Because of other problems, namely no compression, the engine would not start.
However, it was noted that as I was cranking the engine over, that the oil light went out. I assumed that the pump had primed itself just by cranking it over.
Replacment heads were fitted to cure the compression problem, but when I started the engine it was noisy and the oil light would not go out.
I fabricated a long spindle type tool to go into my electric drill, removed the distributor, and spun the oil pump. Light still on.Is there anything I can do to prime the pump while it is in the car.
Can I remove the pressure switch and squirt oil in with a oil can?
Or do I have to bite the bullet remove or the bits and pieces in the way and once again pack the pump with Vasoline.
    Any suggestions most welcome.

It should pressurize with the flat blade tool down the distributor hole, might take a few minutes but it should work. Perhaps repack the oil pump with vaseline?

Did you take the oil pick up off? An air leak between the pickup and the block might cause this. Is the oil sensor broken? Is there any oil in it ;-)

A flat bladed shaft attached to a drill with dizzy removed place down dizzy shaft hole to turn oil pump drive should prime up just nicely
Or pull the oil pump off and pack with vasoline

Vaseline is the easiest method, done it a few times and never had it not work.

The one thing that you are doing right is not starting the engine till the oil pressure is up

Having said that .... Generally you will have to start at the beginning (Repack the pump with Vaseline)

    However .... Try the following

Take the oil filter off and try the drill on shaft method again .... or .... Crack the oil lines to the radiator and use the drill on shaft method

By removing the filter ... you will take away the resistance of pressure // as it is full of oil

    The dangerous way is ....
Another way is ..... oil filter off .... LOW PRESSURE of compressed air down the rocker cover ... use drill method // don't seal up the motor ... allow it to leak air .... as you just want to persuade the oil to rise // not force it .. as you WILL blow seals

Be aware that I have not had to do this myself .... but have contemplated it if I was desperate

Myself ... personally tho .... I would repack it, if the drill method with oil filter off did not work

Easier to remove the dizzy than the oil pump in my opinion

the easiest method is the screwdriver on a drill method...

take the dizzy cap off turn the engine by hand for one full revolution of the dizzy to get the direction of rotation sorted, mark the dizzys current position. remove the dizzy.

over fill the engine with oil dont be shy add at least 3 extra liters spin the pump with the drill on a screwdrive in the same direction as the dizzy was turning.

it'll prime in about 15-20 seconds tops.

once youve got it primed drop a suction line into the dipstick port and remove the 3 extra liters or just drain that much out of the sump.

the other thing that really helps with the priming is removing the pressure switch or the filter if youve got a speed brace and the right drive bits you can prime it by hand with the filter off.

    I finally got it going.
After trying every thing suggested I have had to revert to the tried and tested way,i.e. pull the front off the oil pump, pack it with vasoline ande hope like hell that the oil light goes out.
It did and the beast is now running.
    Thanks to all who helped.
