UK: Father convicted after Land Rover Crash

Saw this on SKY news and also in the RSS News Feed:

BBC NEWS | England | Lincolnshire | Family death crash father guilty

Very sad event. Highlights the hazards of bodgy modifications.

No doubt the father has paid the ultimate price.

I actually watched this news report on youtube via another link that someone had put on here for a different video......

and according to a friend that was there a car came hurtling towards them the road wasn't big enough and he swerved to get out of the way of the oncoming car as he had no where to go sending off down the embankment and into the river....

it also commented that he was on the roof of the vehicle with a spanner trying to smash the rear passenger windows to get the kids out...

needless to say I was surprised to read this

When I first started reading about this I thought the blame was at least equally the fault of the mini-bus driver, if not more, but after reading about how shoddy his repairs were and the fact his vehicle wouldn't brake in a straight line and so forth, well it put a different slant on things.

All that said, his kids are dead and the verdict isn't going to bring them back. You'd just hope the magistrate takes that into account when sentencing.

I've often wondered if anybody here in Australia knew about this tragedy, I must say I was devastated when I first heard about it a couple of days after the accident.
We planted some trees in our garden to remember them by and they have flourished during the last year. We also play a song by John Williamson that we have chosen, also as a way of remembering them. It's a terrible tragedy and I really feel for Gresh and the rest of the family.
After following the trial, I cannot imagine how he's feeling. Maybe there is a lesson for us all to learn here concerning modified vehicles. How many modded vehicles on the road are unsafe. I bet if the examiners picked 50 vehicles at random off a forum for example, how many would pass as roadworthy.

My thoughts are with the rest of the family right now, not only have four children been lost, but now the remaining children will probably have to relive this nightmare and possibly see their father go to jail.

    Very thoughtful words Jerryd.

I too wonder about the "true" cause. Having studied "errors" for a living, it is often not one thing that leeds to a tragic event. In most cases it is a series of events that link together.

Yes, not a time for blame but reflection.

very touchy and difficult subject in the UK. I am on four UK land rover forums and each one has a very long thread about this And he has been ,in the past a very active member on these forum. I have talked to him serveral times over the years myself
Feel very sorry for Gresh and his family for his loss, but there were some very dangerous and major porblems with the truck ,which according to the police were caused by him . And knowing his old post and boast can well belive this
As i said very difficult set of circumtances. And difficult to comment

I can only go by one small report that I read. In that report it was made clear that the modifications contributed to the end result but the cause of the accident was dangerous driving ie excessive speed. The father was charged with and found guilty of dangerous driving not for making the mods or driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

The sad thing is that the accident most likely would have still happened (because of excessive speed) in an unmodded vehicle - but who knows what the result may have then been.

    All so sad.

I agree, I too am on various UK forums and the reaction on these have been very varied. From the partisan but he is a land rover man so he must be an ok sort of chap to the downright condemnation.

I have had a variety of contact with him in the past, not all of it amicable but I would not wish the loss of one child let alone 4 on anyone. Having said that it was almost inevitable that there would be a guilty verdict in this instance. In the past he has recounted various, shall we say, cavalier practices on a number of forums and all in the public domain.

Although I know that there can be no greater punishment than knowing that you are responsible for the death of your children, justice needs to be seen to be done 'pour encourager les autres' to quote Voltaire. People need to know that bodging and skimping on the basics of safety are unacceptable and will be punished.

Although Gresh has been bailed till sentencing, I think it is quite likely that he will be given a custodial sentence, strictly speaking, the minimum for death by dangerous driving is 4 years although both mitigating and aggravating circumstances will be taken into consideration.
