    East Gippsland Camping??

    Hiya all,

Heading to this area on the Australia Day Long Weekend. Looking for some advise on good camping locations / caravan parks / campgrounds??

Thinking between Cann River and Orbost or there abouts

Would like to either be right on a river or right on a beach.....

    Ideas and experiences please!

My favorite area is the Snowy River area north of Orbost. There is great camping on Varnerys Track on the Roger River or just a bit further on the banks of the Snowy around Jacksons Crossing. Good swimming, sandy rivers, warm water (and large snakes). Grab a map of the area and check it out.

Croajingolong National Park is supposedly very good. Lots to do like beach, wildlife, sandy 4wd tracks and appears to be the place to be.

It is on my 'to do list'...eventually

Wingan Inlet in Croajingalong NP is one of our favourite spots. However you'll be lucky to get in to one of the regular campsites ( they are balloted ). You could ring the Rangers in Mallacoota or Cann River and ask - you might be lucky. There is an overnight camping area which is not usually busy. You can probably get away with staying in there a couple of nights.

To really enjoy Wingan you need a small boat or canoe ( 5hp motor max ). Then you can quietly explore the inlet in the evening and see all the wildlife ( magic ) or go up to the waterfalls ( about 2km ) for a bit of a swim in fresh water.

A little bit out of your specified area but, if you want something less "bush", Mallacoota is great little town especially for kids. The main caravan park/camping ground there is HUGE, you'll always get in. It is right near the water. Plenty do do there, you have the estuary on one side ( fishing, snorkelling etc ) and the ocean beach on the other. ( swimming ). From Mallacoota you can explore some of the Croajingalong National Park, as it virtually surrounds the town. There's a Parks office in town and they're very helpful.

Another place we enjoyed was the Wallagurraugh River Retreat- ( go in just over the NSW border ) it's a sort of bush caravan park - right on the river. Bit of a daggy place but we found it but just our pace. You can have a regular site, or go down the back and have a "bush" camp right on the river. Much quieter than Mallacoota. They only have power a few hours a day. Once again a canoe or small boat is the way to get the best out of it. ( they do hire boats )
