    Big quandary

    I've been looking for a particular project car for a while (it's not a Land Rover) to replace my IIA. I've found one, its cheap (ie three figures largely due to problems with the automatic gearbox), I've got the space/time/motivation/money. I've been quoted $1500 on a full trans rebuild by someone I know not including removal/refit, which I'd do myself + others.

    I asked my old man for advice, since he knows a bit about it... he was rather unhelpful - "for that money, you can't lose".

    As a timeframe, I'm giving myself three years to do it, while I'm finishing uni.

    Do I jump in?

    I'd say go for it as you'll learn a lot by doing it,one of the best lessons I learn't was how light the wallet gets.As a general rule with building a project for time and cost,think of all the expenses then triple it and for time try doubling it.Good luck if you go ahead with it mate.

    Been doing that sort of thing from 2 years before I had a liscence. If you have the space and can afford it then go for it. One of my cars was bought as a shell half buried in mud. We had to get a forklift in and chains to pull it out and load it.

    That's the sort of words I wanted to hear.

    I'm being a cagey barsteward, don't want to give any more details until after I check it out good and proper. And at this point, it's an uphill battle trying to contact the guy (always get voicemail).

    Hang in there and you will get him.
    That shell when it first went on the road had every panel a diferent colour. Cops would pull me over thinking it was a death trap and were very surprised and the state of it once you ignored the colours. When I sold it the wreckers who grudingly bought it as scrap ended up turning it into their work car due to how muck I had done.
