WHAT WERE THEY THINKING...

Building a rough usage off road vehicle with all electronic control systems prone to instantaneous and catastrophic failure. No place for these systems in a remote area vehicle.

Never ever building a vehicle with enough engine. A two tonne vehicle with heavy towing capabiliy needs at least 5 or 6 litres of grunt.

The bloody handbrake, the lack of ventilation, and the lack of driver space have been mentioned buy others, I concur.

mmm disagree . the 300 TDi is very powerfull compaired to the toyota diesels and nissan one. More power and better mpg

If it a modern engine does not need the huge cc's to be powerful

And after all ,while on the subject holdern and ford has big engines but Euro small 2 ltrs that have more BHP and more power than 6 ltr V8 fords and Holderns. I drove my old bosses Falcon V8 which he had spent a fortune on Tweaking. And it was gut less compaired to a 2 ltr Renualt 21 Turbo my brother had or some of the other Euro hot hatches. I was really dissapointed . I have driven faster defenders

In the UK it is pretty much 95% of 4wd on the road are Land rovers and the remaing 5% are made up of evey other make

Properly more range rovers in Kensington high street than in the whole of Australia anyway :)

Oh yeah that is a speical colour and dash . Good knows what land rover were doing letting Terrance Conran design the dash and inside of the first disco. Brown was just livable but the blue :o

Nope, LR did themselves a great injustice by not developing / offering a large capacity oiler.
Developed power is fine on open roads once you're up, up and away.
Like many others, my 300Tdi has been opened up 'quite a bit' and surprises the hell out of people how well the little sucker pulls once it's on the boil, but still if I let it trickle down too far it will flame out on my own driveway in 1st gear high range.
**** poor and about the only really dissapointing thing about the car.
Maybe 5 or 6 litre is over the top but something around 3-4L and boosted would be sensible and flexible [oh what's that, Australians already did that?]

The little Eurojap whizzers might have impressive outputs on paper, but develop this from high boost and complication. A big simple slow revving engine sans electronics is what is needed for an outback rough usage vehicle. The little whizzers just don't cut the mustard when it comes down to hard work, heavy loads, and longevity. Not to mention the added maintenance to keep all the complication working in step. Even a turbocharger is un-necessary if you stick in a big enough engine to start with.
