That can be re-positioned easily, just pop the retaining clip off and move around to a better position.
It's a bit like the gear lever in the Defender with the R380. Most people get in and go " what's with the lever almost over on the passengers side ? " but it can be easily repositioned right near the steering wheel, it just doesn't come like that from the factor, so

Axles made of cheese, grease lubed bearings in later variants, hub seals that don't keep water out, let alone grease in in later variants, CV's that go 'pop' with little load, CWP's that go 'pop' with a little more load, lack of corrosion resistance of the steel bits in later ones, clutch forks made out of pressed tin foil, and no bloody cup holder for my café laté in a Defender( he says after too many James Boags....
