We have a bengal cat, they can get up to 12-15 kilos......paint it black and there ya go a panther .

I hear ya Stevo. It seems far-fetched to me although I suppose not impossible. They would, if they exist here, be very cryptic, making real proof difficult to obtain. On the other hand, such an efficient predator would have such an abundance of available food here (they wouldn't eat carrion, by the way) in the absence of any other similarly large, efficient predators that I would have thought that upon its introduction here, there would be a population explosion. This being the case, there would be regular, credible sightings throughout the Australian bush in the same way that feral cats are often seen. Every other introduced animal I can think of, upon its introduction to this country, has undergone a massive initial increase in its abundance and distribution. So basically...I'm inclined not to believe it.

    I'm with Stevo.

Does anyone know where we can get a poster that says something like, "I want to see the evidence that will convince me"?

Does anyone have an explanation for the complete lack of physical evidence given the number of sightings?
Hey, I would love to believe.....but as VNX points out and myself...so many sightings...so little if any physical evidence. We can fly a man to the moon but can't find out if there are big moggies. Growing up we had a 5000 acre property at Inverell. There was this huge black feral cat that used to haunt the place....he liked to come in and give the farm cats a bit of "how ya goin". He was a wiley bastard...as soon as I snuck off to get my rifle...he'd be out of shot range...just staring back.

So no, as with Big Foot, Yeti, Loch Ness Monster and Elvis sightings....of which many credible people have claimed to see....there is nary a scrap of evidence,

    Regards

I used to be a total skeptic on these.... I was sure they were all caused by too many ales.

About 15 years ago, driving from Falls Creek to Mt Beauty, that changed!

Just before Bogong village, as I came around one of the many windy corners, something big and black moved off the road in front of me and disappeared into the scrub on the side. It was late afternoon but the light hadn't yet started to fade. I only saw it momentarily, so would be hard pushed to swear it was a panther, but it was big - maybe 6 feet long, 2 feet high, jet black and moved in a very cat like manner. Nothing like anything I have ever seen in the Aussie bush.

The missus and I both looked at each other with exactly the same reaction; " Did you see that!"

I couldn't swear to your face I definitely saw a Black Panther..... but I'm certainly not a skeptic any more either

    Ah ya see...now I believe .

Very good point.....I can't think of one introduced species that hasnt gone nuts...look at foxes, rabbits and cane toads. One can find leopards/ panthers in their "home" country...but we can't seem to here.

As for "seeing" things, I think we have all done at that times when driving or even out bush. I may not believe in panthers...but I do believe in ghosts , oh cause I have seen and heard them

I imagine that someone who studies animal populations could put all of the sightings from around the country together and make a good statistical guess at population numbers.

I guess that from the geographical distance between sightings there'd have to be a huge number of them.

either that or you could put them all together and narrow down its territory
