    Pretty damn unlikely

Detailed information on hybridisation in big cats. Includes tigons, ligers, leopons, marozi and others.

    hybridisations in big cats:
Hybrid animals almost certainly only exist in captivity and are the result of human intervention, along with the unnatural living circumstances presented by captivity, and on occasion, artificial insemination

    Hybridisation in the wild:

It is extremely rare for any wild animal to breed with one from another species.
For instance, in the wild the Grant's and Thompson's gazelle live together happily in mixed herds. The species are very alike and only experts are able to discern one from the other. Despite this there are no known instances of these gazelle interbreeding.
The domestic dog will mate indiscriminately with another breed, but wild dog breeds, including wolves, foxes and coyotes, mate only within their own species.

There are, however, several types of small wildcat which do interbreed freely with the domestic variety.
OF MORE IMPORTANCE (in regard to arguments regarding sustainable populations...)

    Sterility in hybrid animals:

Hybrids are usually considered sterile, and sterility is a natural biological barrier against hybridisation occurring.

There are rare situations where nature has proven the sterility rule not always correct and this has resulted in such beasts as li-ligers and ti-tigons.

Despite the rarity of natural hybridisation, and the even lower chance of fertility, we know it definitely happens, and frequently enough that over many thousands of years evolutionary change can come about.
    ...
All reported fertile mules were females, and this has also been the case with all fertile hybrid big cats. All dissected males have all been confirmed as infertile.
and all this before even taking into account the effects of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Cat AIDS).

I'm more likely to win first division in lotto tonight. If I do I will admit, here, that it's POSSIBLE. But nothing more.

I had a female customer that swore she saw a black panther, she lived in the top of cannonvale mountains NQ. I had no reason to dis believe her.

I am looking at a photo right now that states it is shot of a puma taken in the Grampian Mountains. Im not a feline expert, but it is definately a BIG cat, not a pussy cat. Australian bush is prevalent in the photo. Im not sure of copyright so will not scan and put it up here, but it is on page 120 Haunted and Mysterious Australia by Tim the Yowie Man.

You can also find more info about this stuff at Australian Yowie Research - Home

For those that are interested: Elementium Bestia by Craig Heinselman and The Yowie in search of australias bigfoot by Paul Cropper and Tony Healy are good reads, showing documented eyewitness reports by some very respectible members of our community who have everything to lose by speaking up. They had the guts to do it though...It is something that excites or haunts you for the rest of your life..

Neil Frost from Blue Mountans NSW has always stated, you are able to contact him for areas that are constantly traversed by what some people think of as baloney.
You oportunity is there. Most people arnt game enough to take up his offer, and you will understand why photos arent easy to get. Very hard when your ********* yourself...

It might save us all a lot of time if the people who keep insisting, "I know what I saw" spent some time looking at a few sites that demonstrate optical illusions.
It really is remarkable how wrong we can be about what we think we have seen.
The fact that you are 100 percent convinced does not mean you really saw what you think you saw.
It is especially easy to misjudge size.

So you're no feline expert but can categorically state its a BIG cat not a pussy cat. Hmm. By BIG cat do you mean "big cat" as in Tiger, Lion etc or do you mean a LARGE cat ?

Australian bush is prevalent in the photo.
Is that so. How do you know?

There are eucalypts native to New Guinea, Indonesia and one area of the Phillipines. They are also cultivated in many areas of the world including North America.

    As to the photo -

Well with a title like that it certainly sounds scientific and authoritative.

    Sigh.

Haunts you? Sounds like these people need more excitement in their lives...

Who are these "respectable members of our community" ?

The only way to be a Puma in Australia is if a pair escaped and it was not reported. Pumas are mainly for South America and some subspecies from Canada.
If only a single animal escaped it should be death by now.

I just wonder if there is the possibility of early imported Savannah cats which escaped from confinement and crossed with large feral cats. This can be a possibility and Savannah's have an awesome hunting instinct.

Then that would be saying she is a liar, quite offenseive thanks, Vlad

ive watched enough nature videos in my time to know what a pussy cat looks like thanks mate.. I just dont hold a degree in the subject, im guessing you dont either? But still can tell me if a lion is a lion...

Is that so. How do you know?
You missed Africa also matey. I know a little about botany to know what is what. I guess calling people a liar when they state which area the information comes from makes it easier to dismiss? Yes?

Could say the same about any site, this one included. But id prefer not to think bad of things unti ive reseached them..

    Sigh.

As I have bee told on this site: look up the good oil etc.. I have supplied this to those that are interested. By your terminology, the good oil must be BS because that is my interpretation of it..Sigh..

Haunts you? Sounds like these people need more excitement in their lives...

Sort of like people that have way to much time and moderate yes? Or is that a living to you? We need you guys, but not to tell us we are not living (pot calling the kettle black)

As an amature herpetologist for close to 35 years, I spend around 2500 hours between midnight, and 5am a year. Whilst people are sleeping and talking on chat sites, I get to see things most others would not. Meh.. The information I gave about Neil Frost is valid and can be accessed at anytime. You only live around the corner from me..game to go for a trip down south?? NAH, Its all awaste of time, isnt it?

Who are these "respectable members of our community" ?

Ive given you the resources like I get given "read the good oil". Senator Bill O'Chee comes to mind though..hes a pollie so must be lying yeah??

Yeah I get plenty of emails that go like that... in my SPAM folder....

    Meh....No comment

and yet people manage to get clear photos of air crashes, explosions, car accidents, and so on every day.
Again, wanna go for a trip? Bring some underpants, ive seen people that have seen alot burst into tears, but then I dont get out enough, do I? Im always happy to teach people new things.

I posted before information to those that are openminded and would like to further that knowledge. Never tried to change anyones mind. I realize, you will never teach a true blind man to see until hes ready...

    uh huh.

Mate I have spent plenty of time hunting in the bush including areas where "big cat" sightings have been reported (seems to be just about every bloody where these days). As have many mates.

Neither me or any of my mates (mates are people I know, not facebook friends I've never met!) have EVER seen a "big cat" aka aussie panther / puma etc.

And I reckon we'd neither "**** ourselves" nor pause for a photo - a rifle could obtain some lovely definitive proof.....

On the other hand, you will never convince some people of how unreliable eye witness accounts are unless they are prepared to do a bit of research into just how easily we are fooled by optical illusions.

It is truly astonishing how wrong we can be about what we think we have seen.

Fine, upstanding citizens are just as capable of being wrong about what they have really seen as anyone else. The strength of your conviction is no guarantee of the accuracy of your perception.

No panther but not a domestic cat either
Chairman Dean Yirbarbuk said some cats had been caught weighing up to 20kg - the same weight as a five-year-old boy.
GIANT feral cats as big as goats are rampaging through Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
