Is this a cyclone or what!

Just looked at this mornings radar from Mt Stapylton in Brisbane.

Is this the beginnings of a cyclone, or just a very heavy rain depression.

Bit of a low parked off the coast - Wind will rotate clockwise around the low.

Based on the Analysis I would expect a cyclone to be a lot lower in pressure (980hPa) this one is showing about 1007/8.

Nonetheless will produce some rain I imagine.

Yep, it’s the rotation that has my interest tweaked.

So far, in the last few hours we have had 45 mils and it’s not over yet.

Anything under 1000 should be clased as a cyclone.

But this will keep the tourist away.

    It's not really spinning yet?????

The centre has moved much further off the coast now so all is good, NEARLY!

    I’m not paranoid, MUCH.

So far this morning we have had 2 inches of rain, shame we couldn’t move it down to Victoria!

The satellite picture shows a band of middle-level cloud moving down from the northwest. What looks like rotation could be rain from the northwest cloud band and showers from the southeasterly surface airstream around the low. They are at different levels but the radar can't show that.

Maybe up north but we often get pressures below 1000hPa down south. 990hPa is common in Hobart without a cyclone.

The definition of a cyclone has more to do with wind speeds.

From BOM - Australian Climate Extremes-Cyclone

"A tropical cyclone is a tropical depression of sufficient intensity to produce sustained gale force winds (at least 63 km/h). A “severe tropical cyclone” produces sustained hurricane force winds (at least 118 km/h)."

just came back from a week down south (Nymboida) and found 70 mills in the gauge f-i-l said we had some pretty good winds thru here whilst away, and lots of wind damage to trees up past Rathdowney thru to the border that looked a lot like small twister damage
