Thread: what to do defender or disco?

The discovery is far more comfortable compared to the discovery mainly if your a tall bloke. And you will be able to pic up a Disco in good order for a cheaper price. The Defender is a better off road vehicle but if you will be spending more time on the tar get the disco! and for touring they are alot more comfortable!

i'm 6ft and with a young family the defender has tonnes of storage space.....i have found no issues with touring

I cant tell you much about Disco's as I have never driven one.

But we bought a 1994 Defender about 12 months ago now as a daily drive for the missus and kids( 5 months and 22 months) , tourer and weekend play.

Iam 6 foot and my missus is 5 '10 and find the ride/seats very comfy.The back bench seat dosent look real comfy on a long trip but the newer ones (puma) have better back seats.But they are both in childseats at the moment so dosent matter.As they get older I might fit some bucket seats in the back for them.

But overall we love It, can never get the missus out of it.I told her the other day that I might sell the excel (my travel to work car) and get a disco, she have that as the daily and I take the defender that was a big NO she would not part with the defender .

I see the Defender as something that is purely built to do a job. Its not about seals, ergonomics NVH levels or anything like that. Its all about modular construction which makes it adaptable into any configuration to do any reasonable task asked for by anybody or organisation and just get the job done.

The Discovery is a consumer vehicle designed to be comfortable and capable for mums and dads to family things like commute, tour and that type of thing. It has the creature comforts.

I guess it just depends on what you're after.

I have a 94 300 Tdi Defender and a d2 03 Td5 Auto.

The bloke I got the Def from said the kids kept kicking him in the back, I think his missus wanted something a bit more flash.

Front seat and sitting possiton for driver is good, have spent all day driving in the outback and no problems. The a/c in the passenger footwell is a pain as legs cannot be streched as well. Back seats are crap for adults for anything other than a short trip. Head hieght in the back is a pain too low to look through the alpine window get you have to bend you back and neck to look through the door window. It is all a compromise to allow the seats to fold up to provide the load space.

The load space in the defender is fantastic for camping where you can set up your rig with fridge, 2nd battery, water tanks, etc, etc etc.

The defender will go anywhere most people will ever want to go and I am no where near as concerned about scratches to the paint, wading across rivers (no carpet water just runs in and out if it gets in).

Disco is much more comfy, quiet, creature comforts have been built in as opposed to slapped on later (a/c, sound system, etc). A lot of people take the Discos out bush bashing and they are very capable and the V8 D1s are affordable (at the price and km's you may need to be prepared to do some work to keep them going otherwise the buy price saving will be taken up in machanic fees).

I did with the defender for a lot of years as a daily driver but for high speed bitumen work your ears ring whereas in the Disco the miles just go by in comfort. For a young family wanting to do a bit of camping I'd go with the defender for the space to carry all the stuff you need. If your wife needs a power point for the hair dryer after she has waken from the comfy king size bed in the motel then go the disco.

We bought our disco mainly cause we wanted something that would be good around town, a good outback tourer as well as something that could mix it in the rough stuff. The defender doesnt meet that bill...the disco does.

However, we are only a couple without kids. When we go on a longer trip we need all the space in the disco to take what we need. I cannot not imagine traveling in the disco with kids unless we had a trailer to carry some extra gear. We have been thinking about a 6 month around Australia trip and will likely think about a defender for it...more rugged.

well this weekend i got rid of my Disco and bought another defender. I now have 2 a 90 and a 110
My wife prefers defenders and as we have a 5 month old and two Huskies , the Disco is too small . I also wanted a car to be able to travel and go on family holidays. Driving away from picking up the 110 i was think what have i done . But 24 hours later i love the truck. My wfe called the 110 (when she first drove it) the 90's fatter, wide ar*ed older brother . It is her daily drive which she drives to and from work.


I like the defenders after all we drove 40,000 k's around Aus in our one.But my wife is 5' foot nothing and i am 5 .8 so no problem with size in our case . Apart from the fact i have to put steps on the side of the defenders for the wife

I have both a 300 tdi Discovery and a 200 tdi Defender and they are both great.

I think either way you wont go wrong. however if I had to decide on only keeping one..... it would most certainly be the Defender.
