I would hope that the average American isn't alienated because their president actually speaks whole sentences which are grammatically correct; I hope they are in fact inspired by him.
I think I'm being confused with someone else.
I'm afraid my spoken word is not the same as my written word in grammatical terms. I speak colloquially.
Am I elitist? I don't know. Maybe I am in some ways. I suspect it will take others to decide that.
However, in respect to Obama, I think it's terrific that the leader of any nation can speak well. Many great (and not so great) leaders have been great orators - but that doesn't mean they were grammatically correct.
It hasn't been made clear whether Obama can speak at a level appropriate for his audience. I would hate people to think he is a pompous ass owing to the way he speaks.

I heard Bush on the radio today making some announcements, and bloody hell, what a difference! It is really noticeable that Bush has nothing on Obama when it comes to public speaking. The sooner Bush shuts his mouth, the better for him.
