What happened to the Rangie?
After travelling about 1400 kms "Sydney" to "Rutherglen" and back to Sydney with Tony ( Rangier Rover ) I'm convinced that it's NOT size that matters when Towing but it's how the gearing is set up in your Landys , with 4.11 diff ratios in the 300tdi disco and 245/75/16 size tyres , we managed to Tow close to 2.8 Tonne ( Rangie on a flatbed ) back to sydney without any Trouble in a rather hot day , I suspect the ambient temp would have been over 35*c , I'm very proud of the "Old Girl" she towed very well , re: fuel economy I'm hoping Tony would be able to post something up with more accurate figures . this is only an estimate,
Travelled app 1356 kms
used up in total app 163.98 litres of diesel
Average 12.09 L/100km
on our way down we filled up at Supa Sava which I suspect would have to be cheapest "Diesel" in sydney at $120.9that I have seen anyway
oh BTW .....
"oil" leak in front of my landrover incase anyone is wonderingnot my landy
it must be from another landy prior to us pulling up
Amazingly with larger core intercooler on the disco ,"EGT" was quite cool when we were pulling up a long hill with "flat bed" attached.
Speedo
earlier on I had some trouble with the vehicle using a lot of fuel ,and that was the fault of yours truelywhere VE Bosch pump was "slightly" tweeked
that combined with not re-tensioning the Timing belt correclty on re-placement of a new belt and my dudgy job of doing all this had thrown out the injection timing
so I took the vehicle to Graeme Cooper's ,Timing belt was re-tensioned and Injection Timing recalibrated and with A/F Mixture set up correctly now the motor is running leaner , fuel usage figures definitely supports that , more importantly no "black smoke" at all and she has no trouble pulling up a steep hill 5th gear up even with a flatbed attchached , Speedo is way out , when travelling at 110kms, GPS was registering only 93km .
Anyhow Cut a long story short , we managed to arrive in the afternnon @ RutherGlen on Sunday 4th to Gruntfuttock's place ( peter's) house where Rangie was being Kept ,
here is a couple of pics
That Rangie was in absolute Mint condition prior to the Accidentthis is really quite a sad site to see
Tony started her up so that he could drive her up on to the flatbed , she started up without any troble at all , The damage is mainly cosmetic, the running gear and motor looks to be in really good "nick" and she's only done app 150,000km ,That motor is really "quite
ahhh... the seats , interior and carpet , it all looks new...
Peter invited us in for a Beer and a chat , thanks peter , after a quick cold beverage and rather a brief chat , we said our good byes and were on our way back to sydney.
travelling backwe decided to stop at Holbrook to have a look at the main attraction " Submarine Museuem " here are some pics for any "Submariner buffs" here , or anyone who just finds it all interesting. I know I did.
The "Duck's Arrse"
And here is Rangier Rover leaning against the Big old Sub
Here is a question for you Buffs
What's that little "hatch" used for ?
after spending a good 40 minutes or so looking around , we jumped back in the disco and drove to Tarcutta where we decided we'd stay the night as I was absoluetly wrecked from dehydration caused by drinking beer when Tony was driving.
so we stopped right in front of the PUB , parked and went inside for a cold drink , and Tony noticed the "old Bushie" behind the Bar serving drinks but he was having a Cold one himself , Tony asked if was allowed to drink whilst serving the patrons , and he replied " it's nearing closing time , and it was only 08:00 pmbut didn't close till much later .
Anyhow we managed to get the rangie back to sydney where Tony swapped the Trailer over to his Mitsu to tow it home it Should be placed on AULRO Market placed very "shortly" , starting Bid $500.00
P.S Someone on the way home already offered to buy the Rangie from Tony in the carpark of the fuel station , amazing , he liturally ran up to Tony while we were Pulling up .Good Stuff.

One owner 1st time off road
He had japanese riding boots on and got his foot stuck wile giving it a boot fullWent through two very sturdy steel fences. Imagine the noise it would have made.
I have kept fuel receipts and what khos has worked out is spot on. I have to say I have a lot more respect for the 300 tdi now
With out that lump on the back and 4.11s it goes like a rat with a straw up its proverbial for a 2.5.
Tony
The 300tdi is a great economical vehicle, I miss mine. Economy changes bugger all on these things even when loaded and a trailer on board. Our Disco used to return 9-10 litres per 100kms without the camper and loaded up and 10-12 litres per 100kms with a fully loaded camper trailer and canoe on the roof. On one occassion towing full loaded trailer stil got 9.5 litres per 100kms on 600km drive.
The only issue was it was slightly underpowered.
The TD5 Fender (which is a brick after all) returns around 12l per 100kms normally and with trailer 12-15l per 100kms. Still not bad but no where near the 10l per 100kms LR touted. But the Fender is always loaded, roller drawers full of tools, recovery gear and general stuff. 60 litre Engel, large trauma bag, camp chairs, max trax etc in it all the time.

One question ..why is your glow plug light on doing 110km/h ?
Hi Wayenp;
I posted up a Thread a while back about that glow plug light on the dash and it seems to be an electrical fault , Glow Plug timer seems to be Timing out after a few seconds and Glow plugs are working fine , I'm told the dash needs to be pulled apart to get that light /electrical wiring fixed ???I'm still not convinced however this may be the case and if so ,I suspect it may not be worth trying to pull apart the Disco Dash to to fix the Glow plug light ?
