UHF channels

Which channel should be used when in convoy?

Or it might be more important to ask... which channels shouldn't be used?

22 and 23 are for data transmission only. For convoys the 4WD assoc of Vic recommends that channel 16 0r 17 be used as they are close to the emergency channel of 18 I believe . Don't use 40 or 1-8 as 40 is the truckie channel and 1-8 are repeater channels. My mates and I usually stick with 21 or 19 as these seem to be the quietest channels.

I use the Campertrailers official channel of UHF 18 or LROC Sydney branch UHF 13 or any channel from 9 to 21, UHF 11 being the call channel.

And just in case you come this far north, the Pacific Hwy trucking channel is 29 (between Sydney and the Tweed).

1 - 8 repeater RX channels paired with 31-38
5 Emergency channel (repeater paired to 35)
9 - 21 simplex channels (11 usually for general use)
22, 23 Telemetry Data RX
24 - 30 simplex channels
31 - 38 repeater TX channels paired with 1-8
39 simplex channel
40 Road Channel

Caravans usually 16 or 18

Channel 10 is used in the Simpson Desert for 4WDers to talk to eachother. We found it works well having a general coms channel as well as choosing a channel for your own convoy.

Channel 10 is 4wd use. Thats what we use here.

What I think is crap, is that they allow 40 channels to be used publically and without licence, and then we lose Ch5 to emergency, 22/23 to data, 31-38 to duplexing, Thats over 25% of the channels. The insinuation is that you cant use repeater channels when in reality they are public and if anything flooded by radio trolls. The data and duplexing channels are the stupidest, if these are that important then perhaps they shouldn't be an available frequency on the UHF and alternative channels made available.

There was some talk a little while ago of the channel frequencies being split so that a UHF 40ch would be come an 80ch - no doubt it will be a non event (while I'm being cynical) but it would be nice for high traffic areas.
