    Nice looking Defenders Al.

It looks like the steel winch cable on your new addition does not have a thimble in the eye. This is a big NO NO from my days as a test engineer at CCL who used to make bridge and wire fittings. The steel wire loop will collapse under load without a thimble in, which causes undue strain where wire goes around hook, splays wire out there and can crack galvanisation.

If you are keeping the wire on take it to a lifting place and get them to crimp it up correctly. Did that in Leeds and lads in workshop would not even except some beer vouchers!

Well worth doing in my opinion. I have seen many wrongly terminated steel wire winch cables even on official rescue vehicles. Sorry off my soap box now

    Regards

Agree and is about to be changed . going to put a new cable on anyway as not looking too good . But agree don't like a winch without a thimble
All my trucks in the past have had Thimbles (the 90 Has) and as my other hobby is sailing i know from rigging how important that is with wire.

Glad to hear it Ali. Most people just shrug when I mention it and say so what?

Trouble is so many people do NOT understand the importance of it and the direct impact it has on safety. We are wandering off topic here, sorry.

Take a look at this fire truck/rescue tender

How much would it cost to have it done correctly? They are supposed to be professional. IF I was doing a H & S check on this vehicle it would be chopped off immediately or banned from going out!

No thimble, wire twisted, terminated in a bit of oversized squashed ali tube in vice/hammer. A disgrace and it will NOT be an accident if someone gets hurt when this cable fails, because it will fail.

    Sorry Ali for the rant.

Your truck is still nice looking!

    Regards

    Brendan
