    Old Time Navy

As the headder suggests are there any old time R.N. or R.A.N. or R.C.N.

    members of the forum?

If your out there can you tell me what a "Stop" is. Apparently, there are 5 of them, 3 in the head 18 inches long, & 2 in the foot, 9 inches long. The centre head stop is secured with a clove hitch to the gantline. The head of the hammock is then held taut along the gantline, & then the outer stops are secured with rolling hitch. What the hell is a stop???? And while I'm at it, what the hell's the gantline????

I'm guessing the clews are the ropes that go from the hammock to the ring, but I could be wrong there, these could be called nettles. I'm getting very confused.

    Thanks

"A short line attached to the edge of an awning, boat cover, and so on; used to lash the cover to a support."

Yep, looked at that, but it don't help me. I can see its use lashing something up to be stowed, but for the life of me, I can't relate to its use in a hammock. I didn't realise you were an ex-WRN.

Not everyone researches before asking a question

I allways do, you see this is where the net is full of assumptions and we both know what that makes of us....

and besides to have a natter with someone who knows what your talking about is allways better than the cold hard facts..

    G'day,

From what I could delve into, the gantline would be the rope coming off the end of the hammock to which you would secure it to a wall, hammock hook, or even better a palm tree. Gantlines or girtlines go up to a block/pulley in order to allow lifting.

The stop is a term to describe securing a rope unto itself..I guess like a knot.

Nettles are the myriad of small cords that attach the canvas sheet to the ring...see attached pic

Do you have a pic of the hammock?

Fortunately hammocks were gone by then, instead pusser gave me a bed in a room with floors and walls. Every now and then you could go up to the front verandah by the stairs, talk to the taxi drivers and look at the sea maps.
    Can't understand why the mullets/fishheads didn't like the wafu's/birdies....

    hammocks

    Pedro.
As an ex Phot I know very little of knots or rope stuff, but would say that Sydney may have been the last ship to have hammocks. btw I now know how to tie a bowline thanks to a POH.

    happy new year, all!

Yep I do I got my old mans Manual of Seamanship 1937 issue , in that it says there are 5 stops 3 in the head an 2 in the foot so how would this marry up with "securing a rope unto itself" I get the nettles would these be indevidual from the hammock up to the ring or would they be one continuas length laced through the hammock up to the ring?

I obviously misread your meaning in a couple of the comments you made

Sometimes its hard to know what people are actually trying to say......

Sorry...I'm happy to help if I can, so back to sticking my nose in then Jeez I HATE these ugly smilies...enough to make anyone cringe!!

NM it would be very hard to missunderstand me I tend to be very blunt, there is never any hidden meaning in what I say (or do)

this is one of the things that annoy me about the internet people dont read whats written or when they do they interpet it in there own way, in our last little debate I stoped posting because there was no way I could get my point accross without being blunt and probley insulting you and ron so I desisted...even though I was right

anyway back to my hammock problem I'm still none the wiser

    Tony

Do what you say and say what you do
