    Question Buy rather than rent?

Spoke to a bloke at work about driving "up north" on his next holiday. He knows not a lot about offroading but wants to rent a 4wd and spend 6 weeks "up north" with his partner.

He is talking about spending 6 grand + fuel on a Brtiz type rental.

I suggested he consider buying an old v8 Disco or FJ60 toyo, NIssan Patrol etc for 3 grand-ish. Spend up to 3 grand getting it safe and sound. Buy the top of the range road side assist (in case it does have a catastrophic failure. ) and sell it when you get back.

He isn't talking about too remote stuff but would like to see some outback.

He is from Denmark. Done plenty of hiking but not too much 4wding.

What do you reckon? Am I giving him a bum steer?

I reckon he's better off hiring.

If he's to buy he needs the time to look at a few vehicles, get it up to scratch mechanically, buy all the gear he needs (stove, tents etc) then go through the hassle of selling it again at the end of the trip.

Hiring he'll get a much newer vehicle, should also be a lot more reliable.

look at insurance, they charge an arm and a leg and will do just about anything to get out of paying it and charge you instead. check the fineprint conditions, some rentals stipulate non offroad use even if you hire a 4wd

There was an interesting story on 'Current Affair' last week. Actually, most hire vehicles are uninsured!!!!!!
The excess you agree to pay is merely an amount that if exceededed by the damage (to the vehicle you hire, or the vehicle you hit), you will be sued for the repairs.
I'll certainly be reading the very fine print next time I hire a car and there is no way I'd hire a 4wd with such a likliehood of minor damage and me having to fork out.

We are getting the floods up north so there should be a few cheap vehicles, especially in Cairns
