If they are so good for long distance night driving, how come Interstate Truckies don't have them fitted?
Hi Hymie, I drive to Melbourne 3 or 4 times a year and I usually go via the Pacific Hwy to Sydney and then the Hume to Melbourne.

Up until my last trip in December, I had never noticed trucks with roof lights. This trip I came across a few.

On the return trip this time, I came back via the Newell and about one in every three trucks had roof and used them.

I imagine that there is now laws in place to allow them to do so, so they are doing it in big numbers.

    Hey fellas

Sorry I havent been very active on this thread, I only just got a chance to read through it closely. My girl friend came down from South Aus and I spent most of my time driving round Tassie (did a 1000 ks in 4 days not much by other states standards, but Tassie roads are a bit different).

I think Ill just have mounts welded on roof rack when I get it straightened out, and if I get pulled up then Ill play dumb as someone else mentioned.

Thanks for all the useful replies

    Wannabe Eurotrash Scania drivers

High mount lights are great on muddy well watered haul roads and flooding the area immeadiately in front of you. Driver position in a truck is more useful than high mounted spotlights. I can see a gripe coming up. Blinkin so and so cresting the hill in front of you and doesn't dip his roof mounted beams until HE sees you

You lose half the range before the beam reaches the bullbar
    (Ex I-S truckie, 7,000,000 km)

What do lights on the roof do for fuel economy?

480W load on the alternator would would give pretty fair engine braking on a downward slope, apart from that it's all pose for my money.

I'll stick to my pair of bullbar mounted Tauris (100W) thanks

Yeh its personal preference and seems to be a touchy subject

But when I own the lights, where else do I put them?

This thread reminds me of soooooooooooooo many toyota owners, who make experts comments about Land Rovers even though they have never even been in one.

If you don’t want them, then don’t both, but don’t make comments like “their nothing but ****** lights” and so on, because it just shows how little you really know about roof lights and the ADD SAFETY they give you.

As for not dipping your lights in time to avoid the roof lights shinning in the on coming vehicle driver's eyes, before you come over a crest.

    CRAP.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I dim my high beam as soon as I notice the reflected light of an on coming vehicle, or are you lot the type of selfish Mongols that leave your lights on high beam until the other vehicle dims their's first?

Until you have tried them and seen just how much easier and therefore safer night driving is with roof lights, on and off road, keep your ****** and the like comments to yourself because I find these comments offensive, particularly as I have these lights for safety reasons and not as a fashion statement that some of you seem to think they are there for.

Get a life or get a push bike.

So STFU and get back in your boxes!

Sick of this subject being a bitch session.....

(Ex I-S truckie, 7,000,000 km) Thats in a truck, unless that was off road then thats a moot point....sorry

What do lights on the roof do for fuel economy? The same thing as the same amount of lights on the bullbar....

480W load on the alternator would would give pretty fair engine braking on a downward slope, apart from that it's all pose for my money.Doubt it will have much of an effect on engine braking, maybe hill climbing will be a bit slower though

I'll stick to my pair of bullbar mounted Tauris (100W) thanks You do that

    I think that covers it
