Bad spelling on forums

I'm touched, really, but I;m not sure it's in a good way




Well anyone with the attitude of a Territorian ( presuming thats Northerm ~ and Australian Capital~ ) but somewhere they can enjoy wine and decent European food... can't be entirely silly !

The only ones that really annoy me are 'looser' and 'splet'. I love the irony when people say "You spelt that wrong".

It grates when people use the wrong word, e.g.,

"I should of bought that" instead of "have" or

"I'd rather own a Defender then a Disco" instead of "than".

There are a few on here that do both.

Look at the big picture. Are people lazy, stupid or they just don't care?

I knew when I started the thread it would become quite emotive but I had no idea of how personal some people would take it. Sure there are people who speak English as a second language and others may have learning disabilities or are dyslexic but the majority of folk here were raise in Australia with a minimum year 10 education.

My starting this thread came about after seeing some pretty shocking examples of spelling where posts were actually unintelligible. The incorrect use of their/they're/there isn't really a big deal at the end of the day but when you can't make head nor tail of a post because it's got such bad spelling and grammar, especially when you're trying tell help someone, then it really does get to me.

Upon reflection I realise what really gripes me is not so much spelling but appalling grammar. How many times are there posts where someone writes an entire essay as a single sentence? After translating 2 or 3 sentences it's usually done my head in and I skip that post!

I do find vnx205's post rather ironic where he commented on how singling out someone's spelling is off limits but it's ok to make jokes at others expense about weight or other personal attributes.

Presumably the poster meant to write "raised in Australia" and forgot that he had used " others' " in his last para in a possessive sense.

I think that we have to respect that many replies are quick, off-the-cuff, and that the posters only mean to present their POV, and at times more importantly, to help, advise and assist other members.

I'm sure everybody (including even Uncle Ron) has made the odd spelling / grammatical error and I haven't found any that I couldn't understand or that had mistakes I felt a need to criticize (before the ones in this thread, that is)

I made the mistake of selling my County. I don't want make another.

I agree. My '84 County had more comfortable seats than my 1995 Range Rover (despite what magazine writers say about Defender seats).

His best bet would be a V8 110 County of more than 25 years of age.

You'll note I've made no mention of seating comfort for the driver. Why? Because, for me, the County was better than the P38A! I get get aching thighs in the P38A (and did also in my previous '87 RR) within a few miles. I could drive for hours in the County without a problem. I climb out of the P38A after a couple of hundred km (next fuel stop) and I can barely walk.

Interesting. My V8 County with standard 7.50R16 tyres, 4-speed box, and 3.5 V8 was easy to drive everywhere. Admittedly, it didn't have a lift. Becasue a County is under 2 tonnes, it goes quite well with a 3.5 V8.

I was reluctant to sell it and sometimes rue selling it. An ex-colleague owned it for 18 years before me, driving it every day, and he lived in Ryde, often driving it to work at Paddington.

Does yours have working power steering?

I have it on good authority that one of our AULRO members in Adelaide will be selling his 4BD1 County at an exceptionally good price.

I wish I could justify it for myself.

I've seen this car and if it is still as good as it was when I last saw it, it will be a good buy. I won't pre-empt the seller on his price as it may not yet be firm. If it is, then buy it!

Keep an eye out on the forum over the next day or so!

i think theres a spelling error in the page numbers for this thread......

it says there are 34 pages at the time of writing......but i can only access 32.......

if i click on the numbers 32.....33....or 34.....they all go to page 32.........


is anyone alse experiencing this as well...... ???
