Roof lights are both cool and useful - even for those over 40!:D
Had them for years and driven hard tracks at night including lots of deep mud and water. Daylight drives are fun, but night trips are a whole lot better!!!
Mine are tucked up under the roof rack to protect them and are trained down to eliminate all shadows and light up the sides of the track in tight situations. As has been previously pointed out, when the water depth or track overgrowth is over bull bar height they're worth their weight in gold and even excessive mud plugging doesn't reduce their effectiveness.
Camel trophy vehicles didn't have them fitted for image, as everything had to have a purpose. The image was born from that.
That all said, I'd never dream of using them on road and use my bull bar mounted lights for that which they're designed.
As has been said, fit them if you have a want and need, otherwise - dont!

this makes sense to me and I won't need to run the pencil beams unless I need the extra distance.

Unless you have a roof rack, you can fit the lights far enough back along the roof so they don’t cast any light at all on your bonnet.
As far as spots go, you will get the same advantage whether you put them on the roof or on the front bumper.
The advantage to roof lights is that they light up the road directly ahead of you so you get to see pot holes and flood ways and the like, just that bit sooner and they have the advantage of lighting around corners, something spots can’t do.
