Steve,
Sorry to hear that.
The flow ons are going to be horrendous. I dont think people realise how deeply this is going to go.
These American corporate clowns have a lot to answer for.

Sorry about loosing the job mate.
Regarding the greed of the "American corporate clowns" we have here too many CEO who earn millons.
I believe that we have to start cleaning up our corporations as well and bring the manufacturing base of the 60's and 70's back to OZ
Sorry to hear mate....working for myself...the pinch has been on since this time last year....have survived so far....the upside is no one can lay me off. Got made redundant once....and once was enough....never put myself back in a position where someone else has the control.....could be a whole new adventure awaiting you and others.
Regards
Stevo
Steve, sorry to hear that Mate. I knew the GFC was serious when the (US) company I work for had to cut 24,000 (7%) of it's work force globally. We're talking engineers, Project Managers. no position was sacred. I believe the GFC flow-on will eventually hit every corner of industry including the Private Sector. These are uncharted waters the world is in. For our sake, let's hope Oz can pull through.....
Its not just the Mechanical guys either I deal a lot with electrical engineers and they are having a quiet time as well, In my line of work I do the tendering on large contracts and this time last year was pricing $7.5m per month now pricing $2-$2.5m per monthI just cant see how this is going to get better in the short-medium term, if engineers are being laid now then in 12 months time when jobs get to tender stage there wont be any.
