Thread: Cooper ST's on the way out

Whats up with these Cooper tyres? I have had many comments from different people that they are having problems with coopers delaminating. I have ST on the jeep with 30,000km on them and still look like new however saw a ute that had some stt that were nearly bald that had only lasted 30,000km.

Do you do allot of beach driving as most of the blokes that have problems with delaminating do. My tyres seem very stiff in the sand and require a fair bit of deflation to get any traction but are brilliant in the clay and mud. Just wonder if excess deflation is the cause?

No i do alot of outback, high country tracks, my first set of STs lasted 6000ks, the Stez and various other tracks including rocky shale tracks around Lithgow/Sunny Corner, did mine in, tore lugs completely off.

I have only ever had problems with Coopers, 3 sets in 56,000ks, warrenty covered the replacements, but it still cost us extra, we also had them rotated as per the warrenty garrentee and even had 2 Cooper reps inspect the tyres and pressures when claiming for warrenty replacement, the second rep told us that STTs would be more suitable for the type of terrain and driving we do, 25,000ks was the best we got from them

First set of Cooper ST’s, end-of-life was 75,000 km. Current set of Cooper ST's @ 50,000 km with at least 15 – 20,000 km to go - however due to intense rock climbing, many lugs are now missing. In both sets, I have found @ around 45 - 50,000 km the vehicle is noisier and tends to track more. It’s as if the tyre compound has hardening or something…..

FYI, I have used BFG A/T's and this set of Cooper ST's on the Strzelecki track and both exhibited stone pitting in the tread. This is OK as you wear through the pitting over time.

Will have to research what brand to try next…….

come have a look at my 130, they have done 14 000km, the rear ones are completely shagged and the front ones are like brand new?? dunno how that works with constant 4wd????

I have STT's and they have done about 65,000kms which is fair for this sort of tyre, especially when used on road as well. Has also seen a lot of off road use. Still not the 80,000kms they spruik, but not bad either.
You have to remeber it depends on where and how you use the tyre. In Kambalda we would be lucky to get 5 - 10,000kms out of the Dunlops on the work ute as a lot was gravel road.
Horses for courses.

I have Eldorado (made in the Cooper factory), not originally my tyre of choice, charged them to a nonpaying boss's account. First rotation done at 35k, now done 56k, still only 1/2 to 2/3 worn. This milage includes the Strez, which incidentally was a superior track to the bitumen east of the Qld border.

Mate I'm hearing ya, the performance of the tyre is good, BUT, if you do alot of rocks they don't last, I tore lugs off right down to the steel belt, the Cooper rep was stunned.

We also tow a 1.5ton trailer, so spinning wheels on steep rocky climbs are common.

Heaps of beach work, regular trips to straddie at 16psi in the sand! And a fair bit of dirt road loaded with work gear, at about 30PSI for long dirt hauls.

No huge desert trips or gibber!

I would say 10-15% off bitumen MAX- but certainly not an outback car and not a lot of rocky shelf climbing stuff.

The Landy only has 87000K on the clock in 8 years!

They are starting to misbehave on the road but they were always pretty sketchy in the wet!

Dunno what to go for next! I've had these things on for so long I'm sick of the sight of them.....

KM2 and STT are a bit too aggressive! As are MTZ and MTR! i have been happy with the mileage of the ST's.
