Sorry was on the road so didn't get your post. All went well. We had some 60 people out there and managed to clear all 4 farms. There is still lots to do down that way.

    next steps???

I know those in the fire affected areas are again concerned about current threats - will this hot windy weather not stop!!!!

Are there plans for the next working bee? Timing? I had heard that trailers were needed to deliver water and feed - when? How can we help?

    cheers,

    Simon

Fence repair at Chum Creek farm Sunday March 15th.

    Hi everyone,

Graham & Raelene Cribbes are an elderly farming couple in Chum Creek (7km north of Healesville), have lost their cattle farm boundary fences in the fires. Now they have a problem keeping their cattle enclosed. They have all the neccesary materials to replace the fences but are short on physical help.

We are seeing Graham & Raelene on next Sunday, March 15th at around 10-30am to finish off the last 80-100m of a 700m fence that we started on last Monday (Labour Day 9th March).

To make things easy I will meet all helpers opposite the Healesville Cop Shop on Maroondah Hwy at 10-00am sharp and then lead everyone convoy style up to the farm. My car is a silver Jackaroo with amber flashers on the roof.

It would be handy if anyone attending can bring the following -

    • long handled shovels
    • post holers
    • crow bars
    • fencing gripples and application tool(s)
    • fence strainers
    • cordless drills and wood augers/bits 10-25mm x 200/300mm
    • hammers
    • generator(s) for power tools
    • wire cutters / fencing pliers
    • hat and sunscreen
    • chain saws
    • box trailer
    • post holers
    • BYO lunch & lots of liquid refreshments (fencing can be hot thirsty work)

I will supply leather work gloves for those members caught short.

Sunday will be a great opportunity for some members to learn about fencing in preparation for future projects on other farms or around the home.

If you are interested in joining us please let me know at tektrekplc@bigpond.com.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

    Cheers,

    Evan

Calling all Victorians - Bushfire Relief help needed

Repair of bushfire damaged deer farm boundary fencing at Buxton (near Marysville)

A deer farmer in the Buxton area is in desperate need of help to repair his boundary fencing which was badly damaged on Black Saturday, 7th February 2009.

In order to prevent his deer stock from wandering onto the Maroondah Hwy he needs as many people as possible to help clean up the boundary fence lines and to help errect a new deer proof fence. A Bobcat with auger will be used when it comes to fence post installations. At present a temporary holding paddock is currently being used but the bucks keep knocking it over hence the wandering problem.

The operation will be split in half over a few weekends depending on how many volunteers can help us out.

    Operation 1 - 18/19 April
Fence line clearing of fallen timber and burnt posts.

    Operation 2 – 25/26/27 April (Anzac Weekend)
Assembly and erection of new fences. All materials supplied.

    Notes for all weekends -

Accomodation – We will camp on the property. Note : Plenty of firewood available for a campfire or two!

Ammenities – A neighbouring farmer has offered a bathroom with shower and toilet for us to use if required.

Water – We will have at least one, maybe 2 or more of our 1000 litre water cubes of fresh drinking water available for personal hygiene, camp showers, dish washing etc.

    What to bring –
    • Tent/Camper Trailer and all necessary camping gear,
    • cool clothing for warm days and warm clothing for coolish nights,
    • food for all meals etc,
    • leather work gloves,
    • long handled shovel,
    • crow bar,
    • fence strainer,
    • gripple pliers and gripples
    • hammer,
    • wire cutters/fencing pliers,
    • chain saw,
    • axe or tomahawk
    • liquid refreshments (fencing can be hot work)
    • 4X4 drag chains for dragging fallen and burnt timber away fro the fence line.
    • I will supply leather work gloves for those who need them.
    • UHF15 will be the designated radio channel for both operations.

    Meeting place -
We will be meeting up at the intersection of Maroondah Hwy and the Buxton-Marysville Rd in Buxton on each Saturday at 10-00am. Look for a silver 98 Jackaroo with the CERG door signs and amber flasher on the roof.

We will leave at 10-30am in convoy to the farm.

If you need to contact me beforehand or on any working bee day, I can be contacted on 0411 533 248.

If you can only participate for just a day only that is OK. If you can't make it to any of these weekends, don't despair - we have plenty more fencing and other jobs in the Marysville/Buxton/Narbethong/Taggerty district to attend to for many months to come.

If you need help finding the meeting place email me at cerg@tektrek.com.au and I will return with PDF maps.

    Hoping to see you soon,

    Evan
