    new fella advice wanted

hello everyone, first time on this forum, i want some honest advice on buying a second hand 06 to 08 rrs tdv6 or tdv8. never owned a land rover before, but a couple of landcruises work utes. my wife and i love the look of the sports and we currently drive a territory, simmilar in size. realistically it will be used mainly onroad but want good off road capibility for long range touring. ive been watching the car web sites private sales for about 6 to 8 months monitoring prices and they are reducing. i was going to buy a tdv6 for the economy but lately tdv8s are appearing for between $85000 to $98000.i do love v8 power, the car will do some towing of a car trailer. ive driven a v6 but not a v8, it seemed adequate and im sure it will do the job. is it worth stepping up to a v8, considering fuel economy, servicing costs, resale with the price of fuel, etc. also what about reliability, people say steer clear, how good are they. we want to keep the car several years. so v6 or v8 or new v6 for the price of a second hand v8. your opionions will be greatly appreciated oh wise ones. tomcat

I have a few friends with the tdv6 (in disco 3's) and they love it. Also know of one guy with the TDV8 in a rrs and he can't shut up about it. All these people run up heaps of k's on their cars and not one has had any reliability issues. There will be others here with scientific answers regarding economy but from what I've gathered so far, there isn't much between them in that regard. Just the V8 really GOES

I tow a heavy camping trailer easily with my TDV6 RRS - good fuel economy too. (I have to admit I would love a TDV8 though but can't justify it).

Don't be mistaken in thinking a RRS is just an SUV, it is a true, fully functional, tough, 4WD. It will scare you with it's capabilities if you are not used to Land Rovers.

Oh yes, and the RRS is a really cool car too!

    fuel economy

thanks guys, can any owners of rrs in tdv6 and also tdv8 tell me what would be an average fuel economy in real terms, unloaded of these vehicles, firstly around town and then on the highway. not the printed figures put out by the company. i really appreciate your thoughts on all of this. regards tomcat.

Not sure how many folks here have got RRS, and your post heading isn't likely to 'trap' their attention, so you might want to re-post in the RR section with a Q on fuel economy.

I can't help exactly, but I've got a RR Vogue with the 3 litre straight 6 diesel. The Vogue is bigger and heavier than a RRS, so you'd probably do better than:
o Slow speed sand/mountain and low range work: 15L/100
    o Town/stop start driving: 12L/100
    o Out in the suburbs driving/commuting: 10L/100
    o Highway driving: 9L/100

Warning: If you drive a v8 diesel, you will just want one The fuel economy will be irrelevant! I'd love to upgrade, but can't justify swapping out the 6 though.

    Hope that help a bit
    Cheers
    David

    G'day Tomcat,

I don't know a lot about the RRS except I drove the bosses supercharged Petrol V8 and I want one

As far as fule economy if your Territory is anything like my mates 4wd one..... fuel shouldn't scare you at all I wouldn't think.

But on a more serious note, I can't see where you are located.

If you are in one of the major cities, this is possibly irrelevant but if you are in a regional area - think carefully about where your nearest LR Dealer is.

These things are very clever cars - full of very clever equipment. They need to be serviced by people that understand them and have access to the correct Land Rover Diagnostic equipment.

Otherwise... I'd have one if I could afford one

2015 TDV6 D4.... the latest project... Llams, Traxide, Icom 455, Tuffant Kimberleys and Mofos.... so far.
2012 SDV6 SE D4 with some stuff... gone...
    2003 D2a TD5...gone...
    2000 D2 V8...gone...

You want the really boring statistics! Well my TDV6 RRS give me:

11.2 in heavy Sydney peak hour traffic (Spit bridge, Harbour tunnel, Eastern distributor -can't get worse than that)

    9.6 in general running around

7.8 in long country runs such as the Hume highway to Melbourne- no roofrack - cruise control set to 100 - no mountains. But always better than 9 in the country.

These are all measured with the trip computer. Real consumption is a little bit higher than this - about 3% when I add up all the fuel used and the kilometres travelled.

The country economy is better that the TD5 Defender I traded in, the city is about the same.

The RRS TDV8 isn't, real world, any less economical than the TDV6. Both will do sub-10s freeway and around 10 around town, driven reasonably efficiently.

But efficient driving is not what these cars are designed for. They are sports cars and offroaders. I do not know anyone who has driven one and not been mightily impressed. The TDV8 is an absolute barnstormer; the almighty wave of torque is sensational. The TDV6 can't do that, but you rarely want for power on the average windy road. The TDV6 is best value and can run 17" rims. Just don't drive the TDV8 otherwise you will buy one.

    More here:

    In short:

    - For serious offroad buy TDV6 19" rims are not what you want offroad.
    - Only reason to buy TDV8 is if you really enjoy that acceleration. If you can live without TDV6. Oh, brakes are better in TDV8 too and they need to be! Not that the TDV6 brakes are bad.
