Thread: Tips/Ideas for longer term car projects

I believe Shannons offer insurance for unregistered project vehicles - or at least they did a few years ago. I had mine insured but dropped it because it was quite expensive.

The Vicroad permits are easy to get but I think they now cost $50-60 or something like that - you may find it's cheaper to get a tow truck to move it for you if the distance is short.

I built a kit car in the UK (clubbie style)

Main advise I can give is take your time and do a good job that you are happy with. I rushed a few bits and ended up doing them again. Also I bought a few cheap bits and ended up replacing them, so If you are not happy, hold out and get the better quality one.

Work out a plan of attack and stick to it as much as possible, i have in the past started projects that then changed course and i was undoing some of the work i had done earlier (worth it in the end) but takes longer and you might end up going off track.

Box and lable everything you take apart. This also helps when you go to buy new bolts which is a must for old rovers. Go to a whosale nut & bolt shop and get new everything, I think I replaced all the bolts in the cab of my series IIA with the next size up, high tensile bolts for about $10. For that price there is no point struggling with 30years of frozen UNF bolts

It also pays to get a PROPER workshop manual, not just the gregorys/haynes/ellerys (although these can be useful)

We have insurance on the Series III which has spent the last 13 years in the garage - albeit the basest level of classic/veteran/vintage so it doesn't cost much at all (currently about $66 a year, allows 1 trip/year).

I'd say it's worth having as you intend driving the car to repairers.

Yes - I am with Shannons but others do it too - You need the Chassis/VIN number

I read about the fellow down in Gippsland that lost his collection of cars in the bushfires - NO INSURANCE. It's really up to you. I would.

I plan on getting an "Unregistered Vehicle Permit" from VicRoads when I need to visit repairers. Has anyone used on of these before?
No, but had a mate who has. I intend getting one for olute soon. (I think it is $44 a month) - check VicROads website. You are restrcited to where and when you can drive. Vehicle must be "safe" - ie Brakes, Stop lights, Glass etc.
