Should I go back in the automotive trade or try something else??

    hey all,

recently i have been "givin the ass" so to speak from a 4x4 shop here in hoppers crossing. my role was to fit, bullbars, uhf radios and all different after market accessories. Do not take your beloved fourbys there, TRUST ME!!!!!!! my background is a panelbeater/assembler in the smash reapair area.
Now being slow and taking care in my work is not an excuse to let go someone who has a family of three, renting and paying bills every week. i just have been calling different panel shops looking to get back in only of desperation so we wont get kicked out of our unit. thing is i Sooooooooooo dont want to get back in the trade mainly for all the F@#k around you get in the smash repair business.

Now you all are logical and easy minded ppl whould should i do???????

Stay in the trade due to desperation or stick it out and find another career?

    cheers simon.

$$$$ first.....much better to look around whilst you are earning a dollar....so if it means going back to what you did....so be it. Then when covering expenses and putting food in the kiddies mouth.....and with less pressure....look to other opportunities...maybe even study,

    Regards

Gday mate, I agree with bilboboggles maybe do a mobile service as some times it is a pain in the butt taking the truck to a shop when you could go to them and do it anytime working out of a trailer attached to your workmanship(4by) and maybe take the business away from your previous job train up in auto sparky and fit lights and uhf and compressors and what ever other accessorie the customer mite want fitted. cheers jay

That is the best thing about having a trade behind you, you always have something to fall back on. IN these 'so called tough times' having a panel beating trade is great. I say this as people are always going to crash their cars but they won't neccessarily go out a buy luxury items. I say get some panel work and if you really hate it that much, get looking for something else.

Here's a thought my Nephew hurt his neck at work (diesel mechanic) which required an operation and can no longer do his trade but scored a job at his local TAFE and teaching the youngens how to do it....he loves it...just a thought...you would be teaching them how to do it properly

Before I left NSW I was lined up to become a TAFE teacher,it's more money than the trade pays. Pat

    hey guys,

thank you all for your responses they are all great idea's and i am looking and considering each one. i was sort of leaning towards going back to my trade, thing that puts me off is that no one (Employers) appreciates the work you do anymore!! you are just another number in there company, and its just pump, pump, pump out the work so they can get there money. there is no more quality control in the panel trade and thats sad because your talking about ppl's love and joy here (4x4's) and general work commuting cars.

    cheers simon.

You are proud of your work, look for a shop that do restorations and high quality work.
The idea to start your own business is great and you can do it on the weekends while you earn your dough during the week.
To be able to teach on Tafe you have to do a course to qualify as a teacher.

    Hi Simon

In these harsh economic times the reality is that you do what the employer wants or move onto something else.

If for whatever reason you cant just push em out like they want you to then find something else. Have you thought of Tafe teaching. You need to get a certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and if you have been retrenched then you should be able to get funding for some of it from centrelink.

Even if you had to work at woollies and the local servo to make ends meet while you did the training you would eventually come out on top. Tafe really needs good tradies to teach.

    Best of luck
