Maybe treat yourself to some new knives, something with a different shaped grip.

Try a Chiro, they have certainly opened my eyes to a few things that happen in the body.

I can second a good chiro/osteopath or a good shiatsu practitioner.
I've had a back written off by 'conventional' medico's that has recovered to better than it was through using different therapies. My knees will never be the same as my early twenties, but they are a lot better than they were fifteen years ago too.

A good friend and excellent sports physio used to say that a lot of elbow and wrist problems actually originated from a very tight mid thoracic area in the back.
I had quite bad tennis elbow last year from splitting firewood (Yellow Box, yes, I should have known better than to split it by hand..) and it eventually came good from stopping doing what irritated it (used a mates hydraulic splitter) and really keeping up with my yoga (and I realise that's not for everyone, but it works for me)

    [quote=Offender90;930160]Sorry to hear that mate,

I'm not a doc, but the symptoms you describe, (i.e. numbness, tingling, and burning pain) are all symptoms of a compressed nerve. The affected areas you mentioned (i.e the pinky and (I'm assuming the pinky side half) of the ring finger are supplied by the same nerve (the ulnar nerve).

gee you sound like one mate ..lol...

It splits off into two at the palm just below the wrist, so your compression could be anywhere from the wrist upwards. I runs from the top of the palm up through the wrist around the inner back of the elbow up the inner back side of your arm and into the shoulder.

The most common compression places are at the wrist (carpal tunnel) and the elbow (cubital tunnel) & are usually due to irritation / overuse / awkward sleeping position (overextended) etc.

How does the back of your hand feel above the pinky and half the ring finger? Do you get pins and needles there as well, or just at the palm side?
yes the numbness is local to the palm and top of the hand directly in relation to the ring and little fingers.......

Mate, just read the additional posts saying you're a chef... How high is the cutting surface (comapred to your height), and more importantly, which position is your hand in when you're chopping?

the chopping surface about the only one relative to my height and the only one i can use without having t hunch right over ...but this bench in a right pain in the perverble as its a home made jobbie that keep moving around on you ...but in saying that its something Ive just had to live with over the last 12months.......

While you are waiting for the 2nd opinion, try some stuff from the chemist called Flexall.

I have had 2 shoulder reconstructions, and still get a fair bit of pain & the occasional pinched nerve. My chiro can fix it most of the time, but this stuff seems to work a treat.

It is an ointment used by professional sports people for sore joints & things.

If you know where the problem is occurring, Ie in the elbow, then apply it there.

My theory is that being an ointment, it isn't going to do any harm, and if it gives you some relief, then it is worth it.

... lol.. nah, just spend a lot of time talking to them...

... so no tingling at the back of the hand past the knuckles? If so, my money would be on compression below the wrist (where the knife handle pushes on the palm when chopping), but you'd need to get it checked out to confirm.

If I'm right (& the compression is just below the bony part of the palm opposite the thumb), I'd try to get a knife with a wider handle (or wrap some foam around the handle of the knife) to distribute the pressure more evenly accross the palm &/or grip the knife so it sits more on the base of the thumb. That may relieve your symptoms, but rest is the best medicine in either case.

The important thing is, given that its caused by chopping, it's unlikely to be anything nasty.

    errr...
    Cheers
