    bloody dogs

home from a weekend away 10 minutes and hear the dog yelping. Go out to the shed and here she is with a 6/0 hook in her mouth with what looked like it was held taut by the line running around her body. I cut the line and was able to remove that hook only to find one in her hind foot. Off to the vet.
The vet has a look and prepares some local and start to trim the hair and the hook fell out thank heavens
    cheers

9:30pm one night I see our dog run with something in his mouth. I tell him to drop it which he does.

Turns out it was a reasonable sized sinker that he had picked up from the garage. Before I could pick it up, the bloody dog grabs it and starts playing with it. I yell at him to drop it so he rolls on his back and swallows it.

Knowing how bad lead is for humans and assuming its just as bad for dogs, I called the vet who told me made up a solution to pour down his neck trying to make him throw up the sinker. That didn't work so it was off to the 24hr vet. Halfway to the vet the solution worked and he threw up the entire contents of his stomach - except for the damm sinker - all over the back seat.

Got to the vet who took an x-ray which showed a bright white spot in the intestine so it was off to surgery where they opened him up and massaged the sinker down the intestine and out the umm urr back entrance...

Picked him up about 3pm next day.... and paid the vet $1200. Unfortunately we couldn't risk him absorbing too much of the lead before the sinker passed through so we had no option but we took out pet insurance after that incident.

Vets are really good at fixing back pain in humans. They simply take all the money out of the wallet in your back right hand pocket. This evens up the load on your spine. They have to take ALL the money out or it doesn't work. In really serious cases they need to operate and remove your credit card.

I know a few vets so have heard some good stories.

One was a lab that had a gut obstruction. They opened him up and pulled an entire leather head stall for a horse out, including the brass buckles.........

mmm.. no rush with something like that - some paraffin and a few days and it would have slipped out I bet..

    I agree, but I'm not a vet.

And our vets are great too, and definitely have a better bed side manner than most all GP's I know too

I am a vet, I would have gone the paraffin and wait a few days route before resorting to surgery. It would have been cheaper to treat him for lead poisoning *IF* that occurred - unlikely in such a short time frame! Fish hooks, sinkers, and my pet hate - lures with triple hooks are a common occurence when you live on the coast. What I really hate is when a dog swallows a hook on a line and the owners, trying to be helpful, cut the line short. Short line often = bowel surgery = $BIG. Long line = Quick fix. While I make more money from the major stuff, I also value my time spent doing other things, such as family, Land rovers etc. And these things always happen after hours.
