I think the Defender would do rather poorly. It is such an old design. Built when things like crumple-zones weren't dreamt of (seatbelts weren't even standard fitment....).

I was surprised at how badly the Freelander 1 did, only getting 2 (or was it 3) stars. The cabin and door frame was a mess, and the roof had a huge kink in it.

The issue with old NCAP ratings is that the parameters change over time. We now pay much more attention to pedestrian and other vehicle occupant safety etc, not just the subject vehicle's own occupants. I would be curious to know what safety rating a Freelander 1 had when it was new compared to other cars.

Back to the subject of my bent number plate... I have spoken with my insurer and they say simply "since you have to pay the excess anyway, get everything that's damaged replaced..." or words to that effect.

    SO

I get a new bumper, grille and fascia regardless. Since the grille & fascia are both plastic and scratched, it is simpler to replace them than repair. What I need to know now is the RRP for a genuine LR bumper since SWMBO has just authorised an upgrade. When I explained to her the multitude of surplus Defender standard bumpers laying around because everyone gets bullbars, she agreed that we couldn't add to the problem. So no replacement bumper for me... it's accessory time.

Unusual way to get a bullbar. Some people don't deserve new cars.

Wait till I want a rear wheel carrier. I'll just have to remember to throw it into reverse at the lights then.

What would you have to do for a caravan, leave the handbrake off at the top of your steep driveway?

Defender is widely regarded to be the safest car in real world accident statistics in the UK.

OK, I have clarity on the bent bumper to be replaced with a bullbar issue. The domestic gestapo here have basically approved the plan so all I need to do now is source a bar and see if the insurance company will allow me to do this. The dealer is going to give me a quote to replace the standard bumper for this purpose.

    So...

I rang ARB to price a standard, one type only, 07MY onwards Defender bullbar.... fitted..... $1400!!! Is this price right? I have not ever purchased a bullbar before so I have no idea but I thought we were in a recession and now might actually be a good time to get a deal (I know my prices are getting more flexible). There is also the upcoming National 4WD & Camping expo here in Brisbane so where are all the you-beaut bargains with tons of free stuff thrown in? Well, to be fair, ARB did say that they throw in a recovery pack worth $350 but I have most of that stuff and would much much rather get $350 OFF the price of the bullbar.

I'm not fussed on the Opposite Lock style bar, it looks like it leans forward and sticks out too far. So it's the ARB one or nothing, but $1400?

    Thoughts anyone?

Have a look at the ones Rovacraft are selling (can't remember brand) but I looked at them the other week in Melbourne and was even further disappointed with getting the ARB bar when I did.

The ARB price is about right if you include fitting, my bar cost $1100 in October last year.

None of the bars are hard to fit as its simply reusing the 6 bolt positions off the OEM bar mounts. You are best doing it with 1 or 2 helpers as it makes holding and aligning a lot easier.

Also you should be able to import a Mantec bar for about AU$800-900

    Talking

I told you you'd go accessory MAD

As for a bargin my SWIMBO say just pay it! And she threatened to send you the asset register for our car! That'll scare ya (Once an accountant always an accountant )

It's usually hard to get bargins on your well known good accessories as they know you want it and it tends to sell itself. You can get bargins on stuff you really don't need though i.e. a recovery kit

Anyhow good to see you splashing some long over due paint on that blank canvas. It will one day be a master piece.

I also think we saw you last Sat morning going past the Barracks on Petrie tce?? You were going too fast for us to catch up

    Cheers,
