But strictly speaking, I think these fall foul of the bull bar ADRs, being forward projecting. The interpretation is pedestrian safety related. Even the riceburners with gauges on the bonnet fail this ADR apparently.

Sorry to divert a little from the thread here, but the projection that you see on many bullbars, the fishing rod holders, look to me to be plain dangerous. They usually have four bits of pipe projecting an inch or two forward of the bullbar. Thius is a pic of the type of thing I mean:



I reckon with a bit of thought they could easily be redesigned to be quite safe, but as they are I wonder that they haven't been banned. I wouldn't like to be hit by one!

I thought they are banned but it's generally ignored.

Back on topic, looking at these....



.... wouldn't there be quite a side load on the bolt and therefore make it subject to great bending force than the RPL shown above?

What about these from Expedition Exchange US$35 each. I was thinking of getting a pair while I'm in the US.

Ron, if you get a set of these, mount them so that the shackle pin hole is VERTICAL. If the line of pull is not directly ahead and it is rare for it to be, any sideways pressure on a shackle connected with it's pin in the HORIZONTAL plane will destroy the integrity of the shackle, the pin can be bent and the shackle body warped, this will become apparent when you find the pin hard to undo. The swivelling "eyebolts" seem to be a better deal as they will always align themselves to the line of pull, they are designed to be pulled off-centre, check out their WLL (SWL), Regards Frank.

It would have to be almost vertical if you were pulling "upward", the vehicle being winched/towed is usually at the same angle as the slope and unless you have your anchor point up near the top of a tree I can't see it being a problem.
Try someone like Blackwoods or Nobles for a swivel eye bolt or just a standard eye bolt and shackle, should be a lot cheaper than a 4WD shop, Regards Frank.
