I agree. If you already have a dual batt system, fridge etc, then you should alreday have a comprehensive recovery kit. This should be the first thing you buy when you get a 4x4 and take it off road :)Quote:

The reason for these choices are mainly because you will not use them if the car if is in good nick ... and space is a limited in a car
1) A HAND "Come along" winch ... (2 ton pull / 1 ton lift)
This item will get your car out of water, sand and mud is a versatile tool to give you the edge of forward force (will only work if wheels are on the ground .. will not drag a car on it's belly)
Also it is a small item & easy to store
2) 40m of small link chain with 4 medium size shackles
Because the winch needs something to hook onto & the shackles give you the ability to hook up the winch anywhere in the section of the chain ... The length is because there is never a tree right where you want it
Also it is easy to store flat under the carpet
The winch is hard work and takes time .... BUT it will give you a chance
Also it's 5 medium shackles required
2 for ends of chain
2 for connection of winch to chain
1 to take up the slack of chain as the winch does it job and you need to have another go
3) Exhaust lift jack bag
Will lift the wheel or car out of mud & sand holes & back onto level ground // gives you the ability to stuff branches, tin, anything, under the tyre to get you moving again .... Light & a easy store on the roof rack
4) Shovel
For when nature calls
5) A compressor & tire de-flaters
Obvious reasons .... tire de-flaters because they are a "godsend"
6) A Snatch strap with rated shackles
Obvious reasons ....
7) A Tow rope
You can't use a snatch strap as a tow rope
8) A tire tube + tire repair kit
Small light & easy to store
9) Proper recovery points fitted to vehicle (You have to fit it)
Because without them ... you can't help out your mates
I did forget one thing tho .... A pair of leather gloves .... $10
I have the chain & winch and actually had to use it ... The car got drowned in a water crossing and lost motor power ... Had to hand pull it out to dry the electrics and get it going again

I agree, the winch is by far more useful and versatile Arthur. Maxtrax are good, have used them in the past, but some gruby old carpet is almost as useful in bad situations.:p good callQuote:
