    driveway suggestions

OK folks since KRudd is giving us some of our money back (at a greater future cost) i am going to do the right thing and spend it locally on getting a driveway sorted. I currently have a single concrete sloped driveway that leads up to the side of the house and terminates at the front wall of the house. This side area has been grass and leads through to the front of the shed which is in the rear yard. I want to get rid of the grass and put some sort of driveway along the side of the house an filling in the area in front of the shed. I was thinking crusher dust base then gravel but now i am leaning towards a sealed finish. Having just paid through the nose for a concrete driveway on the other side i dont want to re visit that level of expense. Has anyone used bitumen before or could anyone suggest something cheaper.

That's IF you get your money ... last I heard some poncy legal dude is taking the matter to the high court to try & stop it. The taxation office has been told not to print any more cheques until it's been sorted in court.

The bitumen will probably cost you more than concrete. Crusher dust is a good alternative. it packs down very well and can be repaired (wheel tracks, etc.) cheaply. my 0.02c

The main reason i was leaning away from crusher dust covered by gravel was because i will be parking the 80 inch and a camper trailer on it. Didnt relish the subsequent sinking / difficulty in maneuvering and increased discomfort in working underneath the 80 inch. Are pavers exxy if you dont care about colour etc?

    G'day Mick-Kelly

Crusher Dust it is quite fine blue metal dust, are you refering to Decomposed Granite, that over compacted roadbase would give you a well drained driveway and look neat and tidy

sorry to hijack but couldn't resist. I think the bloke is doing the right thing there is a lot of money being waisted, you obviously think it's great that you could be getting $900 but have you thought at what cost, the nation being in such huge dept for many many years but thats only my opinion.

I think that what i call crusher dust everyone else calls road base. The stuff they put under water tanks that is like half arsed concrete.

Crusher dust is very different to road base. Its a nice fine dust which I thought came out from the bottom of the rock crushers. It almost sets - well, the stuff I put under a water tank did at least. The roadbase is irregular in size and a lot coarser than the crusher dust. I actually think that as long as crusher dust is contained and sprayed for weeds, then its a really good rough surface. I wouldn't make a regularly trafficed area out of it or use it in an area with runoff going over it either.

Does that mean that you will be doing the right thing and sending your $900 cheque back to Mr Rudd.
