Band of Brothers - although don't know if it was a movie ... saw it as a series. Bloody good though.

Band of Brothers is the best series, but to my way of thinking, one of the better war movies (and often not recognised as a war movie), is Speilberg's 1987 Empire of the Sun with a (then) very young Christian Bale starring........has depth, an incredible Mustang flying sequence and great music and is in part a story of "ordinary people" caught up in the war.
