I've received a few unsolicited SMS messages from companies saying "This message is free, but your next ones will be charged at $6.00ea. Ph 1300 xxx xxx to unsubscribe." I've phoned my mobile service provider and they have reversed a few of the debits, but say there is nothing I can do to stop the messages. Even replying to "Unsubscribe" costs me a SMS charge or local call. Complaints to the http://www.tio.com.au/] Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman[/url] have no effect, as they say the SMS'ers are operating within the Code of Conduct by offering an "Unsubscribe" option.

I was getting 20 calls a day (which I ignored as I have caller ID) before going on the do not call register, now I'd be "lucky" to get one a week, and those are from charities - they are excluded from having to abide by the register. Definitely worthwhile signing up for, and if any telemarketers do call after a week or so of registering, get stuck into them and report them.

The last telemarketing call i received was from another phone company trying to sell me a cheaper land line rate, i pretended i didn't know what a land line was for a while which was frustrating for him, then i was asking him is he talking about the TV show land line. he gave up whilst laughing after he figured out i was having him on and wished me a nice day.

caller: " hi there my name is Simon I'm ringing to see whether you have ever heard of the non profit organisation Rspca?"

Me: "Yes I work for them"

Caller: "Ok great.....So can I ask you do you love or really like animals"

    Me: "hahahah.....I wouldn't work for them if I didn't"

Caller: "Sorry did you say you work for them?"

    Me: "Yes I did twice".

Caller: "Oh.............(long pause).............would you like to buy a raffle ticket?"

    Me: NO actually I wouldn't.

Hi Gunner, if you have any luck let me know.

The ####### stung my mother for $80 worth of B/S SMS messages before we stopped them.

I’d like to get the money back for her if I can.

I usually just ask them for their company name and ABN number. That is usually the end of it.

I have a cheque waiting to be banked from one of these rip off merchants. I phoned up my carrier, who gave me ROMs number. If unable to get satisfaction, they would persue it on my behalf, but I had to inisiate the dispute. ROM did not hesitate to offer a refund, asked how much I wanted; two weeks later the cheque arrived. I think I made a small profit!

If true, this is really, really, worrying. So someone can send you unsolicited text messages and charge you $6 (or whatever) for doing that?
If you never read the messages, you could end up with a huge bill.

Are you sure you didn't initiate this by signing up for ring tones or something. I know people have been stung by that one. Sign up for a ring tone a day (or whatever) and it is impossible to cancel it.

    Mike
