    The car I had before the Defender was a 1971 Rover P5B Saloon which is not really relevant to this anecdote ( I suspect it's going to ramble) but I include it here because it was a Rover, and a rather nice one.

    Anyway I was sitting in my Rover in the carpark at the university where i work one evening just about to start up and head home and I saw a beautiful green Series 3 SWB with the cream roof pull in to the carpark. It was in great nick and the driver was a young student and sitting next to him in the passenger seat was a young Border Collie. He got out of the car and walked off and the Border Collie sat quietly waiting for his return.

    I thought to myself, what a lucky guy. To be driving round in a lovely Landy with your dog next to you. Does it get better? It seemed that at 18 or 19 he knew more than I did. Okay, luck had something to do with it but lucky or not, he deserved kudos for excellent taste. This memory has stayed with me for years.

    Anyway i have a Landrover now, but alas no Border Collie, I live in a flat and it just can't happen butI love dogs and I love Border Collies in particular.

    And while I strongly disagree with that guy's comments like everyone else here, let's not lynch him. He's missing out on something wonderful and that's punishment enough. Like me, has neither had the luck or the taste of that kid in the S3

    It's one thing to dislike something. But to say a dog is a waste of space is taking it waaaay to far. I don't know where I'd be without my companions. I get to talk their ear off while writing assessments and they just look at me and pretend to listen... Way more then any human could put up with. And they make sure I get my daily exercise with them.

    They sure have their drawbacks but the positives def. outweigh the negatives.

    "He said, women think about they-selves, when menfolk aint around.
    And friends are hard to find when they discover that youre down.
    He said, I tried it all when I was young and in my natural prime;
    Now its old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

    Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes;
    God bless little children while theyre still too young to hate.
    When he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line
    bout old dogs and children and watermelon wine."

    Tom T Hall "Old Dogs & Children and Watermelon Wine"

    PS the comment about women is part of the song and spoken by the old black gentleman cleaning up the lounge; it does not reflect the opinions of the poster per se.

    Like people, dogs and cats come in all sorts.

    I rather like my current dog - but I have to admit that she is a bit territorial, and strangers are likely to get a warm reception (particularly considering she is a small dog).

    Big improvement her predecessor - she was not at all aggressive and would be friends with any burglar; but put a dog sized hole in every screen door in the house, all twelve of them!

    As far as cats go, certainly they are predators on small animals. That is why they are domesticated, and if you lived out of the city you would appreciate why! (We, along with many other places have a mouse plague at the moment - despite the cat they are going through at least 1kg of Ratsak a week. Without the cat this would probably about double, and at $13/kg, the cat probably earns her keep.)

    Our cats earn there keep too. Last week our oldest cat (18) caught a rather large grey rat, which she deposited in the lounge room, for me to tread on when I got up to get ready for work at 5:00am. (Minum its head - yuk!)

    I've only had my D2a Classic a couple of weeks. The other week, was on the way home from the lake, dog (Mastiff x 5mths)in cargo area of car. We stopped to grab something off hard rubbish, so not enough room for dog in there too, so put him in back seat for the 3 mins home. On the way SRS light comes on. Oh No! I've only had car a week. Get home, missus says; "what are these orange wires dangling under passenger seat?" Dog has chewed through the seat sensor wires. Relief. Swear at dog, solder wires back together, cover with convoluted tubing....
