Speaking of sand driving, would anyone be interested in a trip to stockton beach for a day sometime soon? maybe make it a weekend thing and go bush one day as well?
Interesting thought that "off road" = "off tarmac". Last time I saw the figures, by far the majority of road mileage in all states (except possibly Tas) were unsealed. Although roads are slowly being sealed, in most parts of the country only the main roads are sealed (and not all of them).
While the areas that most Australians live in have the majority of the roads sealed, this represents only a very small proportion of the total area of the country and only a small proportion of the total length of roads. (A bit like Telstra covering 98% of the population - but only about 10% of the country)
If it was not already in your signature, I would suspect that you came from some other country with a much higher population density! (Nothing against you for that, particularly since you did the right thing and moved)

we would be again if we were off together.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
I drove Stockton on new years day. I didn't waste my hard earned on CDl's, posh tyres, big power etc. My 1.8 Freelander did just fine (stalled once) but started straight back up and drove out. (its manual too). When are we going back? the dogs want another swim!!!!
So sorry, should have said "any where off tarmac where the surface is loose enough so as not to induce windup" ...happy now.
keeping the cdl locked in these conditions will mean that any wear in the thrust washers shown in the pic timNZ posted will be minimised.
There are plenty of people who have needed to rebuild their CD prematurely because of high mileage on loose gravel roads with the cdl unlocked.
So whats the answer, cdl or no cdl.
Low or high, 1st.2nd or 3rd. 10,11,12,13 or 14 PSI
I might try them all on the same stretch and see the results.
I might add one thing- tubeless or tube tyres, how low can each go! which is better
Hi Mark, as I said on soft sand I always have the CDL locked, I run 12 - 15 psi with tubeless tyres. As for the tubes/no tubes, on the plus side, with tubes, if you push the tyre off the rim it is easier to get the bead back on, but you also run the risk of ripping the valve stem off. The other problem is if you get any sand between the tyre and the tube you will put holes in the tube in no time.
Cheers,
Tim
I always lock the CDL anywhere the surface is loose/soft enough so as not to induce windup. So that includes sand and loose/corrugated gravel roads. My t-case has done almost 400k km and the CD is still very tight.
How low you can go depends on the terrain and how tightly your tyres fit on the tube. e.g. I have 2 sets of tubeless radials on galvanised rims (no beadlocks). They seem to grip very well, and I have taken them down to 7psi on difficult tracks (non-sand) without issues (even spinning on steep rocky climbs). However I know people with simex etc who have lost a bead at much higher pressures.
I prefer tubeless tyres. I have had a good run from mine so far. I carry a set of tubeless patches/plugs. Tube-type tyres and rims are probably less-able to handle low pressures IME.
High range if the engine can pull it.
In sand I have never gone below about 14-16 psi. But would not hesitate to go lower if I got badly stuck.
anyone who is keen for some beach driving practice and play on stockton in april, i am thinking about organising a run, take a look here

Dig up and read my Fraser Island trip reports. Might be something of use to you there re sand driving.
Search for "Vlad's Fraser Odyssey" there were 2 or 3 of them.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
