I am trying to trace the vibration/bearing grinding in my Deefer td5 130. It is diving me around the bend. I just want it fixed. So far I have replaced the wheels bearings all round, new uj on the front prop, adjusted the the transfer brake. Removed front prop no difference. Checked the gearbox, engine mounts. Wheels balanced.
The symptoms are a vibration at 80 kph. it feels as if there is bearing that is shot. With the engine off i coast down a hill and can hear/feel the vibration. This is also accentuated when i have weight in the tray it seems to be worse then.
I have noticed there is a 2/3 mm movement on the rear prop at the diff flange.I can wiggle up and down slightly this movement can also be felt at the sliding joint near the transfer case. I am not sure that this is related to the rear flange movement.
This is becoming unheathly. I am usaually a mild mannered bloke, but this......
Any up/down movement in the diff flange is not a good sign.
You mention that you've run the car with the front prop shaft removed - have you tried removing the rear? If the rear diff pinion has up/down moovement then that could well be the problem.

Put the car on axle stands ... all 4 wheels off the ground
Drive it static in gear
Now you will be able to inspect & hear all the diffs working
My vote is the Diff pinion bearing
The slop in the T/C is standard ... but checking it won't hurt

Thanks fella's.
Would I damage anything by removing the rear prop and half shafts and 5then taking it for a drive to try an isolate the problem??
I had a similar problem when I bought my TD5 130. It had 200,000ks. Did similar things trying to track down the problem - removed the rear prop shaft and drove around with tc locked ( nearlly lost the handbrake drum!!) and found the noise/vibration gone. So had rear prop shaft balanced, then replaced with brand new one. Didn't fix it though.
Guys at MR Automotive explained it is to do with a TD5 resonance thing combined with a long rear prop shaft that occurs at certain revs, at 80 k in forth and around 100k in fifth, they have a modification that fixes it. They create two shafts from one and have the short one from the back of the t/case fixed to the chassis with a bearing and a second short shaft to the diff. Similar to some long bodied trucks. From memory $1900 for that fix. They also said that it disappears if you fit an auto gearbox $7 - 9000 for that.
I did read somewher that if you fit an overdrive it also disappears - $3000?
I learnt to live with it. Put some sound proofing in - $60 and a days work, made a little difference.
The big breakthrough was when I decided to use the storage box under the back seats to carry various soft things ie exhaust jack, overalls and raincoat, tool roll (4wd Action subscription) and a few other things. And then left the lid off.
I reckon that the hollow box amplified the noise/vibration.
Chunkier tyres also helped by drowning out the other noises!
I think its just another Landrover thing.
