well the crap you put up with is all about peoples perception of life and death...so that make your job all the much harder and as far as I'm concerned there simply isn't enough of you to go around........to you NM and keep up the good work

Hmmm, sorry, no sympathy there.......assuming you are talking a person with 2 arms/legs and can actively work. I've had to do some crappy work in my time and take on jobs I didnt particularly want to as a single man and as a parent. $420 pf is better than a kick in the balls.I have seen people crack a nut when told that they are going to have their benefits cut off, to the point where the police were called and removed them. Try facing that every day, and see if you dont build a wall between you & the next person in line.
yes this is true too ...but again in relation to "taring the brush"...tell that to someone who needs to feed his family on, hypothetically $420pf???....![]()
Bottom line is not everyone wants to work hard to earn a quid, we live in the lucky country with opportunity galore...some grab that by the horns...others expect it on a silver platter/ are owed a living. My ex, with 2 youngins was on a single mums pension plus part time work plus going to Uni full time and now is a qualified lawyer. My current partner/ fiancee, when I met her was same, mum with a young one......working full time plus going to Uni to do a Commerce degree.
As for Centrelink, I think it would be a bloody tough job and not a very appealing environment. That said...service in many places isnt much chop...doesn't have to be a government department but lets face it, when was the last time the Government sacked a bucket load of their workforce???

Stevo
Hi NM
This is everyday at work for me as well (I'm not a nurse though). I like your attitude that there is still hope.
I think the current economic crisis is only going to make it worse, especialy with cut backs to emergency service budgets Australia wide.
Cheers Andy
BTW, I like nurses! (minds out of the gutter please)

No, but a good mates missus does, Just like real life, EVERYONE thinks they are the most important..........
I think I'd be a little weary and not so friendly if I copped the abuse these people do and I reckon it'd wear really thin when it comes from some of the lowest forms of humans in existance
None the less, if you choose not to be helpful with sharing what you know, so be it, You don;t have anything that I personally wanna know![]()
very true Mike...
Perhaps I should point out that I wasn't trying to put down Centrelink employees, but was taking the realistic view that anyone who has a job that crap is not going to want to do it on their own time when they aren't getting paid...
If you love your job - fair enough...![]()

Well, a few I can think of :-
Telstra/Telecom, many thousands of staff since the late 1980's and ongoing.
The entire Commonwealth Dept. of Works.
The entire Commonwealth Employment Service
Thousands in DSS/Centrelink under the Howard and Costelloe regime to the point where the place became such an unattractive proposition that thousands of staff that didn't get put off left anyway.
Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service
Repatriation/Veterans Affairs hospitals
Civilian employees in naval dockyards and a number of dockyards closed down.
Australian Defence Industries
No doubt others will recall many more. Then there are the state governments who have slashed and burned.
