    Generator silencer

Howdy - I'm a newby - and i have a query that is not directly associated with Landrovers. However i expect a great number of fellow Disco owners have gone camping in the bush and been concerned with portable generator exhaust noise. I have an Engel SHX 2000 which I find a bit noisy - can anyone suggest a practical way of quietening it a bit - without switching it off, that is! A design for a screw-in muffler would be ideal. Thanks.

grab 2 or 3 4 foot by 4 foot ply panels (or as appropriate to suit your genny) some pickets and simply arrange a blind for it.

    the ADF uses sandbags.

    Hi and welcome.

i think it is good that you are concerned for the noise you will make. But, perhaps a good battery and solar setup would be better?

Sorry.... i dont mean to hijack the thread, or make you feel bad, but.....

Nothing annoys me more after working hard and getting time off, than going camping and having others show up with generators disturbing the very peace and serenity I went bush for. I wonder why some even bother if they cant live without power intensive appliances for a short time. They should stay in a motel or travel with a tour company.

OK, now if you use it for competition weekends etc, emergency repairs, or there is no one around for more than 2km, then that is different.

Black Knight has the easiest option but noise is far more noticeable at night, and if your unit is noisy it will annoy fellow campers, so a better silencer would also help. Ask the manufacturer what they have available.

PS generators have caused a number of issues at camp sites making the camp unpleasant for all.
I know a fellow who has some sugar and a growing collection of power cords from generator campers.
I dont condone his actions, but have had a pleasant night because of them.

probably the most annoying thing at any campsite.
i was at an airshow all weekend and two generators near us were extremely noisy, one was only running a hut water urn for no costomers, the other in a bus.
a third was so quiet that you could only hear it by standing within five feet of it - that was a honda - definatly the quietest gennys around.
sorry that doesn't help with your problem, however shielding it with a box or similar is good and get a longer extension lead.

My $99 Chinese generator is a two stroke yet is almost inaudible a car length away. I did make up a piece of 2" tubing, L-shaped with short base and long leg, with a 90 degree bend and a spike welded on for driving into the ground. I position the generators' exhaust outlet into the tube thus passing the fumes and some noise a metre up into the air away from possible complainers. Only complaints I have had were about smoke when it had inadvertently been over-oiled, and again, about smoke when it had not fully warmed up. I have had this little gem over five years and over 500 hours on it now.

I have a couple of stories about generators.

The first one illustrates that there are some people who use them who are aware of the problems they can cause and who go out of their way top be considerate of others.
In the little section of Gregory NP just beside the highway, we were getting ready to set up our tent late in the afternoon. The only other person there was in a fair size motorhome. He came over and asked if i would mind if he ran his generator for an hour or so (to charge up a battery, I think).

When I told him I had no problem with that, he set up his generator some distance away on the far side of his vehicle. His vehicle was about 50 metres away so the genny was quite a way from me.

I think he ran it for less than an hour. I'm not sure because I had to make an effort to hear it at all.

Some people do what they can be be considerate of others.

The other story is not as pleasant and I may have come across it on this forum.

Someone had a fairly expensive generator some distance from his vehicle running a light. The light blinked briefly at one stage, but he didn't think much of it at the time.

When he went to turn off the generator some hours later, at the end of his long extension lead he found his big expensive generator had been replace by a little cheap one.

Of course it may be an urban myth.
