    Breaking the golden rule.

ALWAYS GO BACK TO CHECK ON YOUR MATE IF HE DOESNT SHOW UP.
Whilst at Albany my young workmate rings asking if I want to come out to Bornholme fishing and 4x4ing with a couple of his mates,I declined as it was too windy.
Jimmy followed his mates to the beach but couldnt keep up,on the way down the last big sandhill Jim snapped the A frame mount off his rear diff and couldnt go no further. He waited for 2 hours before getting a lift with surfie back to Albany. No sign of his so called "MATES".
Jim called me when he was in mobile range but I wasnt happy to try and help recover his vehicle in such a remote place only an hour or 2 before dark. His mum took him out to recover his valuables in her Rangie.
I picked Jim up at 7am the next morning with the thought of "bush mechanic" welding the diff to allow a recovery. It just wasnt possible as the ground was too steep and unstable. We then snapped the rear tailshaft setting the vehicle up to snatch it up the dunes.I did manage to snatch him up a reasonable distance but couldnt snatch him around a 90deg turn with a steep bank.Luckily one of his "mates" who left him behind turned up to help. With a double snatch we were able to get him around the bank and to the top of the dune.At times I was gaining on the pootrol in front, despite having a front wheel drive Rangie in tow,he just didnt have the horsepower or traction despite having 34" tyres deflated to 10psi.He wanted to know where I got all the power from. 2.5lt pommie power compared to 4.2l jap boat anchors I told him.
Also gave him a firm BOLLOCKING on leaving Jim behind, pointing out he could have been needing medical help not mechanical help. The excuse,we thought Jim was too scared to drive the sandhill and was walking to the beach Why wouldnt you offer a lift in this case????
I towed Jim back to Albany,he spent the rest of the week getting a secondhand diff housing and tailshaft and fitting.I dont think he really loves his Rangie at the moment, last time he went to that beach he broke the gearbox on the same sand hill.

Isn't it amazing how the forum gets runs of things.
That's the third rear ball joint mount in a week!!! And AFAIR we haven't had one for years.

There was another thing a couple of weeks ago that was very rare and two happened in a week, but I am having a Seniors Moment and cannot remember what it was..

    Unhappy

It is hard to find people to go with that care about others. I don't go out 4Wd driving with anyone now because they either brakedown and want you to tow them back to town because they forgot to Grease a uni for 10 years, or i breakdown and they ask me to ring a mate that can get me out of there.

But that is why i just go fishing on the beach and don't go with others because you cannot trust mates.

.... It's not the Rangies fault ... He needs to understand that he bought a old ride and it needs to be prepared properly for "off road" driving .... If the car is suspect ... It needs to be attended to // Haynes manual for a birthday present would be appropriate

Oh .... and he needs to find new "less smart A" friends .... But don't worry ... If "the mates" are pushing it that hard // Their turn will come

    Had that happen once.
It's not the way to go.
We all go out then we all come back together unless pre arranged that someone is heading out early or staying on.

Not impressed with his 'mates', but as stated before, and I know that Bornholme can be a difficult trip, the vehicle needs to be tip top in those conditions, especially turning 34" tyres

Well done Andrew, you are a legend
