Thread: rear work light...

I saw a nice hella rear work light on ebay that I would like to put on mine but I just don't know how to mount one without drilling into the body I have enough holes in the rear of my disco with all the cracked and shrinking seals as it is

where can you get them telescopic light poll things? can you fit them to the rear of a disco mount it to the spare wheel holder or something

mate you standard spread wll be fine for the rear and simply make a sliding pole mount and attach it to the rear tire carrier

Someone on here has just put one on there disco, all they did was bolted a bit of plate or angle on with the spare tyre bracket and extended it above the tyre on a pole

Heres a couple of pics of the way I did mine.





Used a cheapo light from Supercheap. Ran wiring to a couple of relays under the bonnet and also to a switch on the dash. Wired to the reverse light circuit and the park light circuit so that lights must me on and the vehicle in reverse before light comes on (handy reverse light that way). Alternatively manual switch on the dash for over-riding at a campsite etc.

I grabbed one of those cheap hand held lights when my work light busted - works fine. The one I had is just square section steel anyway. Switch at the base of the light. I reckon you could make one for half the price you mentioned.

Some time back I cut down one of those tow ball bicycle carriers, welded the pole to a piece of angle iron and bolted the angle to the spare wheel nuts. This way the bike carrier opens with the door and you don't have to take your bike off to get the rear door open. You could use a similar system for a work light or anything else you may want to bolt on the back. I had a couple of old wheel nuts where the little chrome or stainless covers had come off and they had been replaced. I used the old ones, ran a 14 X 1.5 mm tap through them to extend the thread the whole way. I used spacers to pack the angle iron away from the spare wheel rim. The tap was not that expensive but from memory my bolt supplier only had high tensile 14 X 1.5 bolts and they blew the budget.
If you don't have old nuts (now now) you could swap a couple of locking nuts from the road wheels to the spare as their little covers would come off and you could tap them through. May not be useful for your job but just a thought for any other rear project.

He's just made one up for his D2 which is almost identical to the set-up I made for mine a couple of years ago - but Nealo's post has pic's.
