I don't have to imagine it. My 13 year old daughter, Caroline, died in a horse riding accident 4 years ago, the anniversary is tomorrow.

Don't get too bogged down in the how or why just learn from it, never fall into the "it won't happen to us" trap. Because it can.

Honour this girl by making damn sure it can't happen to your family.

Fair enough keeping people away from Snatching and Winching operations, but I fail to see how a dampener will affect the recoil of a few hundred newton meters of kinetic energy.

Wouldn't exactly say it's a 'shocking' death. The way some 4x4 rednecks behave it's not at all suprising. In fact it's more suprising that this kind of thing doesn't happen on a weekly basis.

Nevertheless, it's still terrible news, if not suprising. That poor Dad.

Ever heard the expression...if you have nothing nice to say...say nothing at all?? Of course it is a shocking death....a child has been killed. Whats 4x4 rednecks got anything to do with the story? I think you will find people from all walks of life make mistakes, errors in judgement at different times in their life.

As the general consensus of most of the comments here......is to be more vigilant when it comes to our own/ others recoveries,

Mate, I'm not saying that it's not a big deal and I'm not saying that it was rednecks that caused this accident. I'm simply stating that I'm not at all suprised it happened; that doesn't take away (nor did I intend for it) the fact that it is still a bloody horrible thing to have happened.
I certainly didn't intend for anyone to take it that way. I'm not that cold hearted.

A dampener will expend , reduce and change the direction off the recoil/ energy so the snapped cable/block/snatch strap/attachment will hit with less force at a lower angle(hopefully).
Try it yourself, stretch an big elastic band over a table(at around 10cm high) with a sinker attached and let 1 end go, it will hit your finger, now get 2 much smaller sinkers on a fishingline and place over middle off band , it should cause the elastic+sinker to hit table before your hand and reduce impact/ pain and distance it actually travels. Same action applies to a dampener.
