    Yengo (NSW) Wilderness

Just received this via email from 4WD association

Yengo NP to become a Wilderness Area The Premier announced today the declaration of Yengo National Park as a Wilderness Area.
The announcement has come out of nowhere, the consultation period for this was ended in February, 2002, over 7 years ago.
There is a fact sheet available on the NPWS website but be aware it is old and may not reflect what has actually been declared.
We are still waiting to see the details of the declaration.

Yes, it was on the news tonight. They mentioned no horses, no 4WDs

    Thanks Martyn,

I saw this on the ABC and wondered about the ramifications given that the area seems to have been closed off effectively for a while now.

Will Sydney's tourist slogan now be "a city surrounded by wilderness"

The unfortunate part about it is, as I see it declaring wilderness is a management tool by NSW NPWS. The have so much land under their control, 36000Ha added in last year and 6.7million total. I think management is beyond them with the resources they have, so locking it up is the easiest way.

The again NSW labor has always pandered to the green vote.

Getting ready for the next election! Also on the news tonight - a further drop in approval rating of the Premier, now way below the opposition leader; but also well above anyone else in the government.

I think I've probably vote labor(ish) for most elections, can't see it happening this time though (and nothing to do with the subject iof this thread).

I just wish they would allow 4wd access on at least some roads/tracks - as it is these areas are now restricted to those - for whatever reason - are young enough and fit enough to walk in the area.

Namadgi National Park here in Canberra is the same - no one can get in there, yet it is really in no better condition than the Brindabella National Park which borders it to the north which has full 4wd access - even signposted tracks.

There has to be a balance in all of this - to simply lock it up so only the young and or fit to use is not the way to go.
