Thread: Can the police hide whilst doing speed checks (NSW)?

Don't know about NSW policy, but it's common practice over here.

I don't know about the eastern states but in SA & WA they carnt and if you prove it you normaly get off

If they're hiding, that validates my theory that the purpose of the exercise is revenue raising. Seeing a police vehicle (ie. visual deterrent) will do a far greater job in achieving the objectives of road safety.

A lot in Vic seem to "hide" as well. Not so much hide as partially obscure.

Was it a radar or a camera on the tripod?

The Police have been doing vehicle identification checks with cameras lately. The software in a computer attached to the camera reads the vehicle's Rego and compares it with a database of stolen vehicles, unregistered vehicles, vehicles with unpaid fines or people with arrest warrants from the household of the registered car. A positive match is radioed to Police further down the road, usually at an RBT station, where the vehicle is pulled in.

In Vic a lot of the radar offences are recorded by civilian contractors, in civilian vehicles. Hiding can't get any worse than that.

Radar or Lidar...you would have been wheeled over. Speed camera has to be on the road the vehicle is travelling, not up a lane. As Diana said, may have been ANPR...automatic number plate recognition system.

A good question, Diana. I saw no further police cars along that route (20km to home).

Oddly enough, I'd been discussing that very subject this morning with Guy Stanford, Chairman of the Motorcycle Council of NSW over a campfire at McPhillamy Park (Mt Panorama) where we had camped overnight.

Seems probable - with a tripod mounted lidarI guess it would be hard to target particular vehicles.

Seeing police with speed measuring eqpt. is rare on the Gt. Western Hwy between Emu Plains and Mt. Vic as there are very few places they can set up with safety. Generally, I don't worry about the police except in a few well known spots where they can set up.

In Emu Plains, the the HWP hides behind the bushes on the west-going on-ramp to the M4. I see him as I pass him going to work. They catch the drivers who are still slowing from the 110km/h section to the 90km/h section.
