New Pirelli ATRs LT first impressions

    Hi all,

I've just done the 5000ks on a new set of Pirelli ATRs LT. I must say they're a great tyre. They're slightly noisier than the OEM Michelins but they grip noticeably better especially in the wet, they also seem to be wearing well.

I have a set in 245/70 16 on my Rangie.

Not sure how many km they have done now, but it would be getting on for 10 000. They have done everything I have asked for thus far. Mud, sand, dirt roads and bitumen, they seem to be good at them all.

Mine also appear to be wearing very well. Probably due for their second rotation now.

I've got these also and think they are a fantastic tyre. Mine a heaps quieter than the OE Michelins though. Something that really struck me was how noisy the Michies were, whereas the Pirelli ATR are pretty much inaudible. But, talk about traction!
    Cheers

I presume you guys are talking about XPC's .They seem to get very noisy at the end of their life, that is worn out. They seem to slap the road.

I went to BFG A/T's,& couldnt believe how much quieter they were compared to the worn out Michies. The Michies are quiet when new but they seem to get noisy which you dont notice over time.

Now my BFG's are nearly worn out & i cant tell how noisy they are until i get something to compare them to.....,but i recon they are noisier than the were when new.

How are the Pierellis in the mud and sand, compared say with BFG ATs or similar? And how about cost?

I've only driven home on my new LT245/70-16 but had the opportunity to find out that they work surprisingly well on my muddy lane - better than I expected.

    Pirelli ATRs

I did 52,000 on mine, about half of that was towing a 2 tonne van.
They dont loot much, in mud great - better than expected. A little disapointed with them in sand needed lower pressures below what I normally use. Nice and quiet tho.
Running Bridgestone at present only because Pirelli stocks were nil as they were entering into Aust. in their own right and not through an agency.

I haven't run BFG ATs on my Rangie, but I did used to use them on my ute. I was going to fit BFGs to the Rangie (I think they are a great tyre) but none were available in the right size at the time.

At no stage have I regretted my decision to fit the Pirellis. I have been surprised at just how good they have been in mud and sand.

Have to agree with Slunnie. The Pirellis are significantly quieter than Michi OEM in all conditions. I notice it most when driving near concrete barriers.

Their wet weather performance is second to none and their rock climbing ability is amazing due to their silicon compound. Not sure how well they will do in real mud because of their very street like pattern. Ohh well, with the rain we have been having and the itch that I am getting, only time will tell..
