I seem to recall in the soapbox section, an electrician complaining about getting this sort of enqiry from at least one idiot a week.

I remember the thread Col!

Of course, any electrician is going to say "No - you can't do it" but obviously many people get away with it quite okay.

I am tending towards not bodging it and just getting a 15A plug put in. The wiring in the house is pretty interesting at any rate!

I dunno if the landlords will mind. They are a bit neurotic.

Hey Shonky I've been known to make 15A adapters in the past

but I agree with others don't risk it with rental property even though most have ten double adapters and more than 10A loads on a single power out let

I'd be surprised if the land lord would not allow you to put an out door weather proof 15A in the garage or shed.

This is exactly the advice a sparky in Brisbane gave me at the time. He didn't have much of an issue with people doing it, and thought it was fairly risk free if most other things are switched off, and you connect (ideally) to a GPO close to the meter box.

But - a friendly sparky should be able to install one for you cheaply. A GPO is $5-10, the wire will be cheap if the run from the meter box is short. That just leaves labour.

Just make a 10A-15A short lead and make sure nothing else of large consumption is running on the same cct at the same time, the wiring is the same size regardless and the protection "should" protect the wiring in the house regardless..........Not that I've ver done it before
