When I joined the reserves as a Combat Engineer in 2004, I was enlisted, sworn in and bused to Kapooka in a matter of 3 weeks....

BUT, I did have to finish qualifying as an Engineer before I could apply for any of the Mog/rover courses.

During the first twelve months I did heaps of other training with my unit like combat first aid, nav, comms etc plus other engineering specific stuff like water purification, mine detection etc...

The Initial Fitness Assessment upon enlistment was pretty easy. There was a beep test to level 7.5, 20 pushups and 50 timed sit ups.

The BFA is a little harder with minimum pushups depending on your age - I was aged 34 when I enlisted and I think I had to do a minimum of 40, then do 100 timed situps (knees bent sliding wrists just over knees) then a 2.4 km run for my age limit was 12 minutes. We normally do this every couple of months.

    Cheers

Thanks again for all of your advice!

Well i went to the talk a couple nights ago and i am sold! sounds like its one of the best choices i have made to date I'm very excited to get in and get started. I have booked in for my O.D.M? on the 25th of July, and plan on going to Kapooka in the hotter months before Christmas

I went and had a chat with the other Drivers to find a old school mate there and the others were a great bunch! to think i will be paid to drive Land Rovers and Unimogs in the bush!

Plan is to spend this next month working out getting fit and buy a suit for the interview

And i was glad to learn the training is all undertaken locally which helps me greatly! One last question which i did forget to ask on the night , Is it possible to undertake the Driver Training prior to Kapooka? Just due to the fact i want to wait till the summer months but would like to get the Driver training done asap

    Cheers guys!

    In short, no.

Army has a duty of care to ensure you are appropriately prepared to undertake any sort of training.

At Kapooka you will be taught - amongst other good things - first aid, how to receive and act on orders, navigation etc, etc. You need these basics before you go onto further training.

Basically, you have to be taught to walk before you run.....

    Good luck,

    Pete

Well i am slowly going through the process of getting in as a Driver in the reserves

I have been to the Info night to make sure its for me and left very keen and excited to take the next step, so i filled in all the required paper work and handed that in yesterday. I have JUST recieved a call regarding my medical asking a few questions i was nervous i would say the wrong thing but i dont think i have screwed up as of yet ...

I guess i will have to wait a couple more days to hear from them too see if i am not a criminal or diseased human being ...

I am booked in on the 25th of July to get my Medical, Physical etc done So i hope all goes well on that day!

    Cheers guys!

    Hi guys,

I am in. Just came home from my Appointment Ceremony - I am now officially on the dark side: Officer Cadet (OCDT) at Sydney University Regiment.

    Now the fun starts
