    welding while attached to car

    is it ok to wels onto front and rear bars while there still attached or should i take them off first, i just want to weld end caps on the bars

    Disconnect the battery, then weld til your heart's content.

    I think you need to disconnect the alternator too?

    not normally

    but if you have a few output leads going to different things it would probably be a good idea just to be safe...

    As long as there is no (12V, car) circuit all's good. Keep the (welder) earth as close as possible to the arc.

    i agree with ian^^^^
    keep the earth as close to the weld as possible.

    no need to disconnect the battery, just keep the earth clamp as close as possible to where you are welding

    I used to use this method in preference to disconnecting four batteries, would not be prepared to risk it on any vehicle with even the most basic of electronics/computeritis.

    If you disconnect the battery, and keep your earth close to the welding - on the bar itself rather than the body - you'll be right.
