    Windows 7?

I am thinking of upgrading my Windows XP to Windows 7. Does anyone have any expertise on whether this would be a good move? MS is offering half price for pre-orders and it might be worthwhile if its a good thing.

As much as I'd like to I can't go down the Linux path because of the software I use for website design. I love the whole open source concept, but there is not a decent alternative for Dreamweaver in open source. Or for Photoshop.

The key thing for me is that I want things to be hassle free - which is probably why I haven't gone with Linux to date. So any comments on Windows 7 would be appreciated.

All right, Ron, I just noticed i miss-spelt Windows in the heading, and I can't edit it!

I've not played with it but the consensus is that it's far better than Vista

Call me a stick in the mud Willem, but I'd be sticking with XP which is tried and proven and rock solid.
Especially if you need reliability for business use.
The first cut of a new OS will inherintly always be buggy, although I hear Windows 7 is much more stable than Vista
    My 2 cents worth...

    I say go for it.

I have replaced all but one of my PCs with Win7, just leaving a single XP machine for testing purposes.

It is very stable, and quicker than Vista for sure, and I have been using the beta and then the Release Candidate.

I skipped Vista altogether, after trying to like it for 2 or 3 weeks. Reformatted the drive and went back to XP.

No given up on Windows. Vista drove me to Mac and I'm much happier now. Even if W7 is better, faster and more stable than Vista it still borrows from the same interface and I don't believe that has improved from Vista.

For info.. XP to W7 requires a reformat, unlike Vista to W7 which is a 20min upgrade

W7 is at RC1. While it is a major improvement on Vista, it is still a RC.

If you have a spare machine and want a play, go for it. If your'e doing serious work stick with XP, tried and proven.

Early adoption is alright for a play but what additional benefits does W7 have that would make you dive off the deep end? I'd be conservative, Microsoft does not have a brilliant track record in supporting its OS's, abandoned Me and its users and now abandoning Vista and its users. It'll be interesting to see what MS does to provide an inexpensive upgrade path for Vista owners?

Serious users will wait for W7 SP1 before taking the plunge.

Willem if you want to try Linux and still maintain Windows software perhaps look at installing the Sun Systems Virtual Box under Linux and running your XP software in a virtual machine. I have had some success doing this - and some not so successful but it may be a possibility!
