Are there any problems with fitting different style/pattern snow chains to the front and back wheels?
For example I own a pair of ladder-style wheel chains and a pair of diamond-pattern chains - could I for instance, put the diamond-chains on the front wheels and the ladder-style on the back wheels?
I can't think of any reason why not - but then again I've never seen anyone do it - and I probably will never do it anyway but would just like to know.

That's the way I do it, Diamonds on the front-Ladders on the back.
Never had a problem, turns the car into an unstoppable go anywhere monster.

I had a set of ladder chains on front and back of a SWB back in the late '60's - was following the snow cat around Smiggins without a problem.

Have you ever used the tyre chains on mud at all?
Not the sloppy stuff but rather the hard packed clay type, like you get on some of the climbs in the Victorian High country. The type that turns any pattern tyre into a racing slick.

I usually carry them for an emergency but haven't had to use them in the mud as yet.

The only time I used chains for mud was at Tantangara Dam - and that was black, sticky goo
Other than that only used in snow - or when the snow is melting and it is just an icy, coffee colored slush

There's no real issue doing this, like most things it's being aware of what you're doing rather than just making do-or-don't rules. Diamonds give better lateral grip than ladders, but ladders are better longtinudally. Either are a long way ahead of unchained wheels so it's all good. If anyone complains about the mismatch point out that fitting chains to one axle would be a far greater difference in grip between axles and just do it.
