Ron, I thought I was a halfway decent rider until I got onto the track first time. Took me about 18 months to really get it down pat and made the national championships in my second season.
One third placing in 16 heats, got about the lowest point score in a national title meeting ever, but I was there with the best that year.
I started as a passenger, was a buzz, hip and shoulder on the track in mid turn to help keep it all stable. Move your weight forward or back to help with steering and traction, then wait for the 70plus MPH wheelstand as it comes out of the turns into the straights.
Crash, some local speedways do have practice nights where riders will let people try out as passengers, give it a try if you get the chance, frightening as hell and exciting like nothing else at the same time.
